Filenews 2 January 2026 - by Marilena Panayi

Flu cases are increasing, patient admissions to hospital wards are also increasing, with the first death already recorded in a state hospital.

As stated in his statements by the press representative of OKYPY, Charalambos Charilaou, the death that occurred several days ago, concerned a person who belonged to the vulnerable groups of the population and occurred in the previous days.

According to Mr. Charilaou, "we have been observing in recent days increased activity of winter viruses in the community and consequently we are seeing an increase in hospital admissions".

Until now, he said, "although the occupancy of the wards is around 85%-90%, there is no problem in the operation of the hospitals".

This year, he pointed out, "we are also seeing a lower number of admissions due to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which mainly last year had led to an increased number of admissions to paediatric departments, which we are not seeing this year."

Regarding the coronavirus, Mr. Charilaou stated that "there are patients in hospitalization, however their number is small. With COVID-19 we are seeing admissions all year round and now we have the experience to treat our patients."

The spokesperson of OKYPY stated that "an increase in cases and admissions is expected in the coming period" and reminded that "every year the greatest activity of viruses in Cyprus is recorded after the festive season".
