SEVERE DETERIORATION OF THE WEATHER - GUSTY WINDS, NOTICEABLE DROP IN TEMPERATURE AND SNOWFALL - EXPECTED FOR NEXT 5 DAYS

Filenews 8 January 2026

A drop in temperature, a strengthened wind field significantly, rains, thunderstorms, this will be the landscape that will make up the weather today, Friday, while tomorrow, Saturday, a slight rise in temperature is expected, a temporary weakening of the wind field but rain is expected. On Sunday, the field of winds strengthens again, rain, isolated thunderstorms, snow in the higher mountains. The same scenario will continue on Monday and Tuesday, but Cyprus will again be affected by a cold air mass.

This was stated by the Officer of the Department of Meteorology, Andreas Chrysanthou, when asked about today's weather phenomena after the yellow warning issued by the Department of Meteorology, adding that "today we expect to have a significantly enhanced wind field".

"Already in Paphos we have very strong to strong winds and temporarily we also had gusts and even stormy ones. A wind field, which will be generalized and we will generally have very strong winds up to 6-7 Beaufort throughout the territory of the island, with stormy gusts of up to 8 Beaufort," he said. "There is a warning that went into effect at 8 and will be in effect until 10 pm. All areas will be more or less affected by this wind field and that is why there is no spatial determination," he pointed out.

He also stated that we will have rains of mild, moderate intensity, some isolated thunderstorms have already occurred in the morning, they will occur in the next few hours.

"So we will have local rains with isolated thunderstorms and snow in our highest mountains. There is already snowfall on the highest peaks of Troodos and we expect them to gradually get snow at lower altitudes," he added.

Regarding the drop in temperature compared to yesterday, Mr. Chrysanthou said that yesterday it ranged from 19 to 20 degrees, today between 15 and 17 degrees.

"Yesterday we went up to 23 in the coastal areas. So, we perceive a drop of almost 5 to 6 degrees in general throughout the territory, a much larger drop in the higher mountains, which may remain in the single digits close to 4 degrees, the maximum temperature today for our mountains, which compared to yesterday is a drop of almost 10 degrees. So we perceive a drop in temperature, a strengthened wind field significantly, rains, storms. This will be the relevant landscape that will make up the weather today, Friday," he added.

When asked what the weather conditions are expected to be in the coming days, Mr. Chrysanthou said that tomorrow, Saturday, a slight rise in temperature is expected, a temporary weakening of the wind field.

"But we will have rain. Less chance of getting storms. We will also have snow in our highest mountains. Sunday, the field of winds strengthens again, rains, isolated thunderstorms, snow in our highest mountains," he said. On Sunday, he added, we will remain at Saturday temperatures. "Monday the same scenario, i.e. local rains again, isolated thunderstorms, but we will be affected again by a cold air mass. A drop in temperature on Monday may even be noticeable. Temperature drop Monday, Tuesday. These days will be with very low temperatures compared to today," he further said.

Monday, Tuesday, according to Mr. Chrysanthou, "we may have rain and storms and snow again in our highest mountains. It is much more favourable conditions from Monday onwards to get snow in our highest mountains."

Asked if in addition to these strong weather phenomena, other phenomena are expected to occur that are usually followed by such weather conditions, Mr. Chrysanthou said that in an enhanced wind field, a tornado is not excluded in coastal areas and in mountainous areas where there is wind channelling.

''We must emphasize that hail is not excluded in a storm. This is also a parameter in our weather report. It is these phenomena, which will compose during the five days, I would say, the scenery of the weather," he concluded.
