Nicosia has been declared the Best Cultural Destination in Europe for 2026 by the European Best Destinations (EBD) institution, starting the new year with an extremely important international distinction.
According to the municipal authority, this first place marks a dynamic start and confirms the city's steady course towards international cultural recognition and its emergence as a new hospitality destination.
The distinction emerged through the annual evaluation of European Best Destinations, which is based on both the judgment of an international committee of cultural experts and the participation of the public. Over 22,000 travellers from 131 countries rated Europe's top cultural destinations, with Nicosia collecting the highest overall score of 18.6/20, ranking 1st.
The same top ten European Cities of Culture for 2026 also includes the cities of Florence, Vienna, Leuven, Sibenik, Verona, Tomar, Rouen, Oxford and Graz.
According to the organizers, Nicosia stood out for the unique coexistence of rich historical heritage and contemporary artistic creation, for the authenticity of its cultural atmosphere, but also for its vibrant and evolving cultural scene. Particular reference is made to the special character of the last divided capital of Europe, as well as to the hospitality and Mediterranean pulse of the city.

"This international recognition strengthens Nicosia's position on the European and world cultural map and confirms the Municipality's strategy for the promotion of the capital as a modern, sustainable and open cultural destination, with respect to the past and investment in the present and the future," the Municipality's announcement states.
The Municipality of Nicosia thanks all cultural institutions, organizations, creators and citizens who contribute daily to the formation of the cultural identity of the city and is committed to continue to support actions and initiatives that enhance culture and quality of life.
