The request for the creation of two new dams in the province of Paphos comes again and in an urgent way to everyday life, after it was found that the heavy rains of the last few weeks, mainly in the province of Paphos, had essentially zero impact on inflows into the dams.
After what Cyprus and especially the province of Paphos experienced in 2025 in the water sector, with the destruction of the desalination plant of the province by fire, the emptying of the Mavrokolimbos dam due to damage and the drought, the request for new dams was raised by both the president of the EOA Paphos, Pambos Pittokopitis, and the MPs of Paphos of DIKO and EDEK, Chrysanthos Savvides and Elias Myrianthous.
They emphasize the necessity of building small dams in rivers that cross communities in order to stop significant amounts of water from ending up in the sea. The seriousness of the situation, they point out, has been highlighted in an emphatic way in recent weeks, where while Paphos was drowned in the rains, the dams are stuck at almost zero percentages, given that the vast majority of the rain percentages that fell ended up in the sea or on land, in areas where there are no dams.
They point out that these projects can be included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan since EU member states can review their proposed projects and replace them with projects of the highest priority.
