MINISTRY OF INTERIOR - STUDYING POSSIBILITY OF A HOLIDAY FOR PHEDONOS

Filenews 30 January 2026 - by Michalis Chatzivasilis

The Ministry of the Interior sent a letter to the Police, asking for information on the investigation being carried out into the mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phedonos. This development, according to information from "F", arose after the uproar that broke out and Annie Alexui's posts concerning allegations of abuse of his wife, which were denied by both him and his wife.

According to our information, the letter of the Ministry of the Interior was sent by the director general to the chief of police on January 26, 2026, that is, a day after the Police announced that they are starting an ex officio investigation in relation to information that has been circulating on the internet in recent days and concerns an alleged incident of beating of the wife of the mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phedonos.

The aim is, according to relevant information, to inform the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, about what exactly the Police are investigating in relation to the mayor of Paphos, so that if the facts and especially the offenses being investigated are of such a form, that they justify initiating the procedures of article 113 of the Municipalities Law of 2022, so that Mr. Phedonos can be suspended.

According to this article: 1) Mayor, deputy mayor or councillor against whom an offense specified in the provisions of paragraph (d) of subparagraph (1) of article 18 or an offense determined as a felony is being investigated by the prosecuting authorities, in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Code or any other Law which carries, in case of conviction, a prison sentence of three (3) years or more, is automatically suspended from the day of publication of the relevant notification of the Minister: It is understood that a mayor, deputy mayor or councillor who is on holiday pursuant to the provisions of paragraph (1), receives one third of the specified remuneration for the entire duration of its validity.

(2) The suspension specified in subsection (1) shall end upon the end of the investigation or the full trial of the case and the acquittal, acquittal or conviction of the mayor, deputy mayor or councillor, against whom an investigation is being conducted or a criminal case has been registered, and for this purpose a relevant notification shall be published by the Minister regarding the termination of the holiday: It is understood that, in the event that a mayor, deputy mayor or councillor is acquitted and/or acquitted by a criminal court, or the investigation against him is terminated, without any charge being founded, he returns to his duties for the remainder of his term of office and is entitled to full recovery of the remuneration that was deducted from him.

(3) In the event of a conviction of a mayor, deputy mayor or councillor for the offences specified in paragraph (1), he shall not be entitled to recover the severed remuneration, shall be automatically forfeited from his position and this shall be considered as vacant for the purposes of this Law and for this purpose the Minister shall issue a relevant notification.

To date, the Police have not responded to the letter of the Ministry of the Interior, while it is possible that they will come to an understanding on the matter with the Legal Service, before the answer is given. However, the Police investigations are ongoing and under the microscope of the investigators are three medical certificates from a hospital, which will be thoroughly examined and it is expected that at the same time persons who issued them or were related to certain events will be called to give statements.

The mayor of Paphos himself welcomed the investigation, noting at the same time that it is an opportunity to clear his name, stressing that then it will be his turn to speak. And his wife in her post, after clarifying that she does not need any form of protection nor "self-appointed protectors with expediency", underlined that those who know her in her workplace, in her family and friendly environment, know that she is not a victim and does not feel fear. At the same time, she referred to her long life together with her husband, noting that they have been living in harmony for 20 years.

Depositions are taken

In his statements, Christodoulos Konsolos, Communication Officer of the Police Headquarters, stated that "the Police continues its ex officio investigation since last Sunday, in the context of which statements are being taken and evidence of the alleged abuse of a woman is being evaluated".

Examinations focus on taking stakeholder statements.
