IT'S SNOWING IN TROODOS - SOME ROADS ONLY OPEN TO VEHICLES WITH CHAINS/4x4

 Filenews 12 January 206

The snowfall in Troodos continues, although the phenomena will gradually decrease in the next few hours, said Michalis Mouskos, Senior Officer of the Cyprus Meteorological Service. He also underlined how significant the weekend rainfall was, reaching 31% of what was expected for January.

In fact, according to the Police, due to the snowfall, the roads Karvouna - Troodos, Platres - Troodos and Prodromos - Troodos are open ONLY for vehicles equipped with anti-skid chains and/or four-wheel drive. In the Troodos area, there is dense fog and visibility is limited.

Mr. Mouskos, who noted that at the moment the snow at the top of Troodos is about three to four centimeters, while in other years there was much more significant snowfall as early as December, said that snowfall is expected to continue for the rest of the day and night, as well as tomorrow at intervals.

He added, however, that the phenomena are somewhat limited, although they will continue to exist at least until Tuesday night. "From Monday night onwards, however, it seems that the phenomena are becoming more isolated," he said. Asked if the snowfall can be increased, Mr. Mouskos said that it will not reach 20-30 cm, but it can go up to ten centimeters.

In relation to the rainfall we had until Monday morning, Mr. Mouskos said that it was significant. "Today's rainfall has not yet been counted, but by 8:00 in the morning we went to 31% of the month, while by Friday we were at 9%," he noted. He also said that the rainfall before noon on Monday was mainly located in the west, but is moving eastwards, approaching Nicosia.

Asked about the importance of snow paving for the aquifer, Mr. Mouskos confirmed that snow is very important, as it slowly melts and strengthens the flows to the dams. "Of course, more significant flows have begun to take place now and we hope that the next few hours and tomorrow will give more phenomena," he said.

"Unfortunately from Wednesday onwards the scene changes and the temperatures rise, so we will have to wait for the next organized system, although there does not seem to be anything on the horizon," he concluded.
