The flu now dominates with its transmission among citizens being particularly increased and the number of people presenting severe symptoms and requiring hospitalization increasing daily.
The coronavirus is at stable levels, while the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), fortunately, is showing low activity this year.
Hospitals are operating with the occupancy of their wards now approaching 90%, however, as the spokesman of the State Health Services Organization, Charalambos Charilaou, told Filenews, "this does not worry us because we have done our preparation to be able to serve all the patients who will need our help".
During the holidays, said Mr. Charilaou, "we had an increased attendance of patients in the Accident and Emergency Departments, with the cases being divided into two categories: the usual cases involving heart attacks, strokes, injuries, etc. and the cases involving seasonal infections and especially influenza A which seems to be dominant."
People admitted for hospitalization due to the flu, he explained, "are mainly elderly people who show the severe symptoms while they are at home."
"We have an increase in incidents and we will continue to have them in the coming weeks. The peak of the flu occurs in mid-January and the increased numbers may continue to be recorded until March. Therefore, it is something we expected and we are certainly in full readiness and eventuality."
