FLU DEATHS IN CYPRUS HAVE REACHED 12 - 'THE FLU STILL DOMINATES'

Filenews 19 January 2026 - by Marilena Panayi

The number of deaths due to the flu this year has reached 12, to date, according to the deputy director general of the Ministry of Health, Elizabeth Konstantinou.

Ms. Konstantinou stated that in addition to the seven deaths to which she had referred last Friday, she received information today about another five deaths, "which bring the total number to 12 since the start of flu activity, this year, last December, until today".

For her part, the president of the scientific society of personal and family doctors, Mary Avraamidou, told Filenews that "the flu is still dominant, the coronavirus appears but with a much lower frequency, while we also have some cases involving the respiratory syncytial virus, RSV".

"The important thing is that citizens who show symptoms do not think that if they take the first test and it is negative, then they do not have the flu. We have cases where the second test came back positive after a day."

At the same time, Ms. Avraamidou said, she reiterated the need "for the protection of people belonging to vulnerable groups of the population and especially the elderly. And let us reiterate that people who show symptoms must be limited because when they come into contact with other people they transmit the virus and the vulnerable, our elderly are at risk when they get sick."
