The concession of water from the dams to golf courses and other tourist accommodation, especially in Paphos, continues at the same time that the water granted by government water projects to farmers is being shut down, reports the Union of Cypriot Farmers (EKA).
"In this way, not only the farmer loses his income, leading him to destruction, but in essence we will not have Cypriot products," EKA said in a statement. EKA calls on the Government and the Minister of Agriculture to convene the Advisory Committee on Agriculture to discuss alternatives that lead to the solution of this very serious problem.
He adds that "farmers are in real despair, while consumers will be asked to pay the final price". "When a semi-occupied country, such as Cyprus, does not take care to have self-sufficiency in food for its citizens, when the country's food security is in immediate danger, then Cyprus itself is at risk," the agricultural organization concludes.
