The circumstances of the death of a 78-year-old man and the possible poisoning of 4 other people are being investigated by the Police in Larnaca. According to the police, on Saturday the 78-year-old's wife initially felt unwell and was admitted to the hospital, where she is being treated, while her husband died a little later.
On Sunday, it is added, friends and acquaintances gathered at the house of the deceased for coffee and support for the family. "During the coffee, three people lost consciousness and were taken to the hospital," it added. It is noted that "the two were given antidotes to treat possible poisoning. The third person is in a comatose state with his health improving."
Scientific tests will be carried out to determine what happened and whether what the five people consumed caused negative effects on their health, while samples will be taken and sent for scientific examinations. The scene has been cordoned off and guarded by the police.
Update - Filenews - Intensive searches at the house in Larnaca, in which the unprecedented case with the death of a 78-year-old man and the transfer of 4 other people to the hospital after drinking water from a cooler unfolded, has been carried out by the Police since the morning. Members of the Larnaca Police Department, as well as the Anti-Drug Service, have received several items from home, awaiting the results in the water from the State Chemical Laboratory.
The investigations focused mainly on the area where the 78-year-old's son lived, who on December 28 was arrested for possession of hard drugs and has remained in custody ever since. So far, both the possibility that there were narcotic substances in the water of the cooler and the scenario of the presence of another toxic substance in it remains open. The results of the autopsy on the body of the 78-year-old, which was scheduled to start at 11 a.m. in the morgue of the Nicosia General Hospital, are also considered important.
What will, however, give a clearer direction to the investigations of the TAE Larnaca is the results of the analysis of the State Chemical Laboratory in the cooler water, which are expected within the day.
The health condition of the four people who are being treated in the hospital remains serious, while two were given an antidote for poisoning. The health condition of a 78-year-old neighbour, who is being treated by intubation and in a comatose state, is more serious. The wife of the deceased, as well as two of his relatives are hospitalized in a serious, but stable condition.
Relatives of the elderly couple, as well as neighbours gathered yesterday at noon at the 78-year-old's house, in order to condole the rest of the family members. At some point, the sister and sibling of the deceased, as well as an elderly neighbour, felt unwell and were immediately taken to the hospital.
