Anger prevails in Larnaca for the new blow of organized crime, which endangered innocent citizens early yesterday afternoon, when shots were fired on the busiest street in the city, Grigori Afxentiou Avenue, during a fierce fight with axes, sticks and crowbars. A person was taken to the hospital with blows to the head, with the Police proceeding late last night to issue 4 arrest warrants against a 48-year-old man, with Cypriot citizenship who was arrested in the hospital, as well as three foreigners of Arab origin 35, 26 and 20 years old.
Offenses of conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal possession and transport of a firearm, illegal possession of explosives, extortion, demand of property with threats, participation in a criminal organization, assault causing actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, carrying a knife and carrying a weapon to incite terror are being investigated against them.
According to a morning briefing from the Police, two cartridge casings (possibly a pistol) were located and received from the scene, while blood stains were also found. The 48-year-old who was arrested was found to have visited around 4:00 yesterday afternoon the Larnaca Hospital, where he is being treated. As part of the investigations that followed, searches were carried out in various premises in Larnaca by the TAE Larnaca and the MMAD.
During a search of an apartment, where three persons of Arab origin aged 26, 28 and 29 live, eight nine-millimeter caliber military cartridges were found and confiscated. As a result, the three tenants were arrested for the self-inflicted crime of illegal possession of explosives and taken into custody to facilitate investigations. The remaining three persons of Arab origin are wanted
It is noted that the detention process for the 48-year-old will take place at the Larnaca General Hospital, while for the other three, which is being investigated whether they are also related to the fierce fight, at the Larnaca Court.
There is a terrifying incident, which caused a lot of disruption in the city center, it took place in broad daylight, specifically at 3:30 in the afternoon, just 100 meters from the Larnaca Police Department. Some of the evidence, in fact, was located in front of a fast food restaurant and other busy premises. The most outrageous thing is that this is yet another criminal act that adds to the long list of attacks of organized crime lately, which has gone beyond all limits. In fact, a person who has occupied the Police many times in the past for serious cases is said to be involved in the case, while he was recently brought before a court for a criminal case for which he was released, on parole.
According to information from Filenews, more than ten people were involved in the fight. Police sources report that a group of people rushed to an operation on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue early on Saturday afternoon and for reasons that may be related to the provision of protection, they clashed with other persons. The second group of people chased them with axes, crowbars and sticks. As can be seen in the released video, fierce clashes followed, while one of the people involved fired shots.
In the area, there was a disturbance between passers-by and patrons of restaurants, who immediately informed the Police, who initially received information about 4 injured. The busy avenue leading to Finikoudes, as well as its vertical streets, were closed for about two and a half hours in order to investigate the scene. Several items were received from the area, in addition to the shell casings, including a car, while a second damaged vehicle is being sought.
The Police were put on alert, while last night reinforcements were called to Larnaca, which will remain in the coming days, since there is turmoil.
The Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, also rushed to Larnaca yesterday late afternoon, who admitted that "the crime has been emboldened" and noted that the government is determined to crack down on it in every way. "This incident deeply saddens us, but we will do everything possible to crack down on the root of evil. Unfortunately, we do not have all the supplies and that is why I would like to call the Parliament with what is pending so that it can provide supplies to the Police, to pass them as soon as possible so that we can be one step ahead of organized crime", he noted and called on citizens to report such incidents even anonymously. Going a step further, he noted that it is most likely that the incident in Larnaca is related to organized crime and spoke of "factions competing with each other".
Asked to comment on what the plan is for Larnaca, after the President's recent announcement of increased patrols by the MMAD, Mr. Fytiris replied that "for all cities there is a plan to strengthen the front-line force and this is what we will do in the coming months. Unfortunately, it is not a simple thing, it is not a button that I raise and lower, but our intention is within the next few months to strengthen the police directorates, either with a permanent force, or auxiliary, in addition so that this force can supervise and control all cities preventively.
The mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, also asked for measures to be taken by the Police through a post, noting that such images are not appropriate in modern cities.
