Filenews 29 December 2025
Cyprus is expected to bid farewell to 2025 with a yellow warning for strong storms on the coast, with an improvement in the weather on New Year's Day and temperatures at the normal level for the season, according to the Meteorological Service.
Meteorological officer Andreas Hatzigeorgiou stated that until the morning of December 30 the weather is expected to be mostly clear, but gradually the clouds will increase and in the evening isolated thunderstorms are expected mainly from the west, which after midnight will expand and affect the whole island. He added that the phenomenon with the storms will continue until the afternoon of December 31. He clarified that on the night of New Year's Eve, the southeastern coast will not be so affected by rains and storms. On New Year's Day until noon, some phenomena will occur mainly in the west, which will subside and the weather until Sunday will be mostly clear.
He further stated that on Tuesday night and Wednesday, sleet or even snow is expected to fall in the mountains and that hail may occur in the storms. He noted that it is possible that the meteorological service, for Tuesday night until Wednesday afternoon, will issue a yellow warning for strong storms mainly on the coast.
He also said that the winds on Tuesday until the afternoon of the same day will be mainly southwest and initially variable, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. On Tuesday night, the winds will strengthen on the south, southeast coasts and then on all coasts, with the result that on Wednesday the winds will blow strong and locally very strong 5 to 6 Beaufort.
He clarified that on Thursday there will be a change in the circulation current of the winds that will continue to affect the island on Thursday.
Regarding the temperature, he said that by Saturday it will be at 14 to 15 degrees with the possibility of a temporary drop of 2 and/or 3 degrees on Friday. He added that on the coast the temperature will be 15 to 16 degrees, while clarifying that they are normal temperatures for the season.
In the evenings the temperature will drop to 4 degrees inland, to 6 on the coast and the higher mountains to zero degrees, except for Wednesday and Thursday nights when there will be no cloud cover, which holds back the drop in temperature.
Asked if there was snowfall in Troodos in the previous days, he said that images of snow were shared on social media, however at the station of the meteorological service there was no snowfall to be recorded by the station. He explained that any snowfall was light, as a result of which with the first light of day the snow melted.
