UPRISING IN POLIS CHRYSOCHOUS - REASON IS KOULOUMAS' STATEMENTS THAT A NEW HOSPITAL IS NOT NECESSARY

Filenews 5 December 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

Angry reactions are recorded in the Chrysochous apartment after the positions of the honorary president of the Cyprus Federation of Patients' Associations, Marios Kouloumas, that the area does not need a new hospital, but an upgrade of the existing one. The Municipality of Polis Chrysochous issued a statement talking about inaccurate and erroneous statements that present a picture that has nothing to do with the reality, which is experienced by the residents of Polis Chrysochous, health professionals and those who have passed at least once from the existing hospital.

Mr. Kouloumas, in an open letter to President Christodoulidis, argued that the realistic and immediate solution to the issue of public health in this border area is the renovation and upgrading of the existing Polis Chrysochous Hospital, characterizing it as a solution that directly meets the real needs of the residents, ensures quality and safety, is economically and functionally viable, and can be implemented within a reasonable period of time without delaying the provision of health services.

We remind you that recently the President of the Republic himself announced at an event in Polis Chrysochous the construction of a new, modern hospital in the area. The representative of OSAK, however, claims that the existing hospital provides a significant range of services within the network of OKYPY, covering real needs of the local community. He argues that despite its good operation, the hospital faces significant limitations, such as the only 11 hospital beds, the limited building and operational infrastructure and the need for modern equipment and better workplaces for staff and patients.

Upgrades are inevitable, even if a decision is made for a new hospital, says Mr. Kouloumas, warning that the procedures for studying, maturing, licensing and building a new hospital are extremely time-consuming, while staffing new hospitals, especially in remote areas, is particularly difficult.

In response to what he states in his letter to President Christodoulidis, Mr. Kouloumas, the municipal authority of Polis Chrysochous speaks of frivolous, insufficiently documented and extremely dangerous positions. Mr. Kouloumas has no institutional role and no right to express an opinion on the inalienable right of the residents of the Polis Chrysochous area to provide proper and comprehensive medical care and care, emphasizes the municipality in its announcement.
