THE UNITED KINGDOM IS INVESTING €40 million IN A NEW BUILDING IN NICOSIA

 Filenews 11 December 2025

The British High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced the start of construction of its new diplomatic complex in Nicosia, with a budget of more than €40 million, in a space that was previously part of the Central Prison. The project is described as the UK's largest ongoing diplomatic project worldwide, marking a significant upgrade of the British presence in the country.

Construction began in December and is expected to be completed in November 2028. The new cluster will be zero-carbon, in line with Cyprus' climate commitments and efforts to reduce emissions. It will include modern officessecurity facilities and a residence for the High Commissioner.

The main contractor of the project is the Cypriot company Atlas Pantou, which undertakes the development of the new diplomatic complex.

The British High Commissioner, Michael Tatham, underlined that the project reflects the strong bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom. He noted that the new facility marks an upgrade that confirms the value of the cooperation between the two countries. As he said, "we look forward to seeing the new UNHCR take shape and to invite our many Cypriot friends and partners to see it soon."

Until the completion of the new building, the existing facilities will remain in full operation, with services provided without interruption, while temporary entrances will be used to serve visitors.
