The heart of the capital, the pedestrian streets of Ledra and Onasagorou, is entering a new era of radical upgrading. The Municipality of Nicosia, through the mayor Charalambos Prountzos, referred in his statements to "F", to the exploratory, structured evaluation of Phase C of the major redevelopment project, which includes the reconstruction of the pedestrian streets, with a total cost of up to €12 million, an amount covered by the Revitalization Fund.
At the beginning of 2026, the beautification of the facades is expected to begin, an intervention that will drastically improve the aesthetics of the area.
In a move that marks a change of course in the management of major projects, the mayor stressed that for the first time the municipality is proceeding with the recruitment of a project manager (Project Manager), through an open competition.
"We listen to the concern and reasonable concern of the people and businessmen for the proper and timely execution of the project. For this reason, we are strengthening the team to study, design and execute the whole project with a Project Manager", said Mr. Prountzos.
The role of the Project Manager, for whom the estimated contract value is €75,000, is crucial. According to the mayor, the contractor will be the "arm" of the municipality for the independent monitoring of progress, the coordination of all stakeholders and the objective treatment of risks.
It is noted that the deadline for submitting tenders expires on 9/1/2026, while the project is financed by the state budget and the Municipality of Nicosia.
The mayor emphasized the commitment to transparency and participation, noting that the Project Manager will actively participate in the process of public consultation with the entrepreneurs of the area. "The city belongs to its citizens. There will be no unilateral decisions, there will be an extensive cycle of consultation and planning. We want to listen, co-shape and ensure that the end result serves everyone's needs. The project manager will be present in this process, ensuring that the eventual implementation will be in accordance with the decisions that will be taken," said Mr. Prountzos.
The mayor also stressed that, in parallel with the planning for Phase C, the municipality continues the long-standing policy of supporting entrepreneurship, with targeted interventions that directly improve the quality of life. Specifically, the installation of awning sheets on Ledra and Onasagorou streets has been completed, increasing the shading hours and allowing the comfortable movement of pedestrians at noon as well.
At the same time, the landscaping of facades, windows and shop signs has progressed and will be expanded, offering an improved and modern image in the commercial heart of the city.
Furthermore, special distribution platforms were installed at the entrances of the stores, significantly improving access for people with mobility difficulties.
The municipal council recently approved a stricter policy of control of micromobility means after problems were identified in parts of the city, including pedestrian streets.
"The upgrading of the environment of the pedestrian streets of the historic center is continuous. With the €12 million we have secured and with the pioneering integration of the Project Manager, we will consult exhaustively with those involved to jointly take the big step towards a more attractive, functional and humane Nicosia", concluded the mayor.
