Filenews 19 December 2025
From January 7, 2026, the process of renewing vehicle registration certificates for the year 2026 begins, with a deadline of March 11, 2026 at midnight, as announced by the Department of Road Transport of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
Licenses can be renewed for a period of three, six, nine or twelve months, while after the deadline an additional charge of €10 plus 10% of the fee due will be imposed. A certificate of suitability and valid insurance are required for renewal.
The TOM calls on citizens to proceed with the process in a timely manner, pointing out that no individual notifications will be sent and that the payment system has been upgraded for increased control. The obligation to declare an immobilization for vehicles that will not be renewed, as well as the consequences for vehicles with pending issues from 2025, are also recalled.
Specifically, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, Department of Road Transport, announces the following, in relation to the renewal of vehicle registration certificates for the year 2026:
- Registration certificates for 2026 will be renewed from Wednesday 07.01.2026.
- The last renewal day will be Wednesday 11.03.2026 at 24:00 (midnight).
- Marketing authorisations may be renewed for a period of three (3), six (6), nine (9) and twelve (12) months.
- After the end of the predetermined date, a charge equal to the sum of the amount of €10 and an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of the registration corresponding to the amount due for the current year will be imposed.
For the renewal of the marketing authorization, the following are required:
- Certificate of Eligibility [ie up to date MOT]
- Insurance cover
It is noted that the process of renewing the registration certificate is completed with the appearance of the "Print Registration Certificate" screen, which indicates, among other things, in a round box, the month and year of expiry of the validity of the license and the registration number of the vehicle. In the event that the process does not reach the screen in question and there is an interruption for any reason, then the process is considered not to have been completed and must be repeated.
It is further stated that the TOM has proceeded to improve the computerized payment system, with an additional level of control over the issuance of licenses, based on the payments made.
- The TOM advises citizens to take care of the renewal of their vehicle registration in time and, in any case, not to wait for the last few days, in order to avoid possible overload of the system that can cause inconvenience.
- It is recalled that those who had renewed the registration of their vehicle for 2025 and do not intend to renew it for 2026, should submit a notice to the TOM for the immobilization of the vehicle. The immobilization can also be done online on the website of the TOM (Road Transport Department (https://rtd.mcw.gov.cy)). If the immobilization of the vehicle is not declared, the obligation to pay the amount corresponding to the vehicle registration tax continues to exist.
- Vehicles for which their registration certificate for 2025 has not been renewed and have not been declared as immobilized, will be deleted from the TOM register, unless the amount due for 2025 is paid and their registration certificate for 2026 is renewed by midnight on 11.03.2026.
- In case of destruction of the vehicle, an application for cancellation of the registration of the vehicle (form TOM 98A) must be submitted to the TOM accompanied by the "Certificate of Destruction" issued by licensed vehicle waste treatment facilities, in order to exempt the owner of the vehicle from the obligation to pay road tax from the date of destruction of the vehicle.
- Driving licences can be renewed online, throughout the year.
Excluded: - vehicles belonging to embassies,
- private buses for large families,
- vehicles belonging to the quarries,
- old vehicles (antiques) with a special license (paying the amount of €25),
- vehicles belonging to the United Nations, and
- vehicles belonging to other organizations with exception code 04 (and do not possess access codes to the Department's system)
for which their owners should apply to the District Offices of the Department of Road Transport for the payment of the registration fees.
In addition, it is noted that persons who face difficulties in using the internet can apply to the District Offices of the Department of Road Transport, the KEP and the KEPO for the renewal of the traffic license.
It is noted that no notices will be sent to vehicle owners for the renewal of registration certificates.
It is reminded that vehicle owners must update their contact details, which are registered in the TOM register, in order to be able to receive information (e.g. information about recalls) about their vehicles.
