The plans for their creation may be close to 10 years and their creation may have been officially announced since the beginning of 2021, but the time that has passed since then has passed without any news for this important environmental project. A fact that raises questions and concerns among citizens and organized groups about the reasons for the delay in the implementation of the plans, as 2024 has now passed.
We are talking about the two linear parks that will cover the boundaries of the Municipality from all sides, in essence, since the first will start from the boundaries of Konia and through the large argaki that passes through the Stelios Kyriakidis Stadium ends in the coastal area of Kato Paphos, while the second starts from the area of the Agios Neophytos High School and ends at the western coastal front of Paphos.
The ambitious plan has been on the table for several years without any practical result so far, despite the possibility of co-financing it from the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union. From the beginning of 2022, it was announced that the design and preparatory work have been completed and the start of work would be a matter of a short time, something that has not actually happened to date.
The first linear park concerns the area of Konia-Pafiakos-Kato Paphos, while the second abuts the communities of Chloraka, Emba and Mesogi. This is specifically an area next to the argaki that starts from the Mesogi area, passes behind the Lyceum of Agios Neophytos, continues by the 10th Primary School, crosses the "Diplakartatzia" and the Mouttallou area and flows towards the sea, to the Historic Coast "Vrexi" of Chloraka.
With the construction of extensive bicycle paths and pedestrian paths, with the formation of small squares that will be places for gathering and social activities, tree planting, the creation of bridges and the creation of small playgrounds along it, these linear parks will be a jewel for Paphos data, local officials estimate.
At the same time, they argue, the prevailing marginalization will stop, the reversal of the existing negative environmental image and the restoration of the natural environment from arbitrary interventions by unscrupulous people.
The project will mainly benefit the population of the adjacent developed residential areas where there are schools and refugee settlements, a safe route network for cyclists and hikers will be created, while its connection with the coastal front will also attract tourists to a different tour, they emphasize. In addition, it will help limit and prevent pollution of the riverbed with waste materials and garbage, as is the case today in many places.
