MAVROKOLYMPOS DAM - FROM ABSOLUTE ZERO TO 15% WITHIN A FEW DAYS

Filenews 9 December 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The image at the Mavrokolympos dam, in the area of Pegeia, once again exudes optimism and positive messages after more than a year of absolute destruction. The dam, which due to serious damage had to be completely emptied during the period of last Christmas to be repaired, has already collected in its reservoir more than 115 thousand cubic meters of water since its return to normality, about two months ago and already has a fullness of 15%.

Although Mavrokolympos is not one of the largest dams in the place, its importance is crucial for the production of Paphos since it is the main sponsor of irrigation water to the producers of the lower western Paphos. The flows that have occurred in recent days have therefore been treated as manna from heaven by the producers of bananas and other crops in low-lying Paphos who in 2025 experienced the worst period of their professional occupation due to drought and dam damage.

The authorities clarify, however, that 15% of the current occupancy of Mavrokolympos did not come only from the rainwater that has been falling for days in Paphos, but also from the influx of desalination water left over from the Asprokremmos refinery.

In any case, however, the agents of the area point out, the image of Mavrokolympos with water again, is a serious reason for optimism.

In addition to the 115 thousand cubic meters that the rains of the last three days gave to Mauokolymbos, based on the relevant bulletin of the Water Department, the dam of Aprokremmos took only 40,000 cubic meters, while that of Arminou, from which, however, it is channelled to the southern pipeline, took 48,000 cubic meters. The Evretos dam received 18,000 cubic meters of water, Kannaviou 10,000, Agia Marina Chrysochous 8,000 and the Pomos dam 2,000.

The Argaka dam is the only one that shows zero flow during these three days in the province of Paphos.
