GOOGLE - WHAT'S CHANGING IN GMAIL FROM 2026

Filenews 31 December 2025

Google is making significant changes to the way Gmail works, removing the ability to manage third-party emails from within the platform from the beginning of 2026. With this decision, Gmail becomes a standalone webmail exclusively for Google accounts, changing a practice that millions of users have been using for years.

According to the company, functions that allowed the aggregation of different email accounts in one environment are being terminated, a development that mainly affects professionals and users with multiple accounts.

Which features are removed

The most substantial change concerns Gmailify, through which users could connect Outlook, Yahoo or corporate emails accounts with a proprietary domain to Gmail, taking advantage of Google's filters and tools.

At the same time, the POP mail check, i.e. the ability to automatically retrieve messages from other accounts in the Gmail inbox, is also removed.

Which users are affected

The changes concern those who use Gmail as a central email client for external or business accounts. As of January 2026, already linked third-party accounts will no longer sync.

On the contrary, users who exclusively have an @gmail.com account are not affected and no action is required on their part.

The alternatives

Those who had adopted Gmail as a central hub for digital communication can switch to independent email clients, without losing access to their messages.

Options include Microsoft's Outlook and Mozilla's Thunderbird, which support multiple accounts and business emails.

Alternatively, users can set up their accounts via IMAP and SMTP on a new client, maintaining normal synchronization, sending and receiving emails, so that the transition to Gmail changes is done without interrupting daily communication.
