DEPARTMENT OF FORESTS - FREE IN THE WILD, 18 MOUFLONS IN STAVROS TIS PSOKAS

Filenews 6 December 2025

The Department of Forests announced that yesterday 5/12, the release of 18 mouflons from the storage area of the species maintained by the Department in Stavros tis Psokas was carried out with absolute success.

This action, according to the announcement, is part of a long-standing and systematic effort to study, protect and strengthen the populations of the mouflon, an emblematic and strictly protected mammal of Cyprus.

As part of the action, the Department of Forests installed special satellite transmitters in ten of the mouflons, so that it would be possible to monitor their smooth integration into the natural environment. "The use of these transmitters will provide valuable scientific data on the movements and behaviour of animals after their release," the announcement states.

At the same time, this monitoring will contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between mouflons and the management actions of the Department of Forests, especially with regard to the management of vegetation for fire protection purposes.

The Department of Forests will consistently continue the efforts to preserve and strengthen the mouflon population, ensuring the protection of both the specific species and its habitat, as well as the entire natural wealth of Cyprus.
