Cyta does not rest on the recognition of the reliability and quality of its people and services by the vast majority of public opinion. "This recognition increases our responsibility and strengthens our determination to lead the way in what we do," Nikos Stylianou, Senior Director of Business Management, tells "F".
"For us, it is not a matter of comparison with other organizations, but the result of a long-term effort to support Cyprus with modern technology," adds George Metzakis, Senior Director of Commercial Management.
There is a very general impression among the public that Cyta is today the public organization with the most positive results and the best performance against the competition. How does Cyta itself perceive this recognition?
Answer of N. Stylianou: This recognition increases our responsibility and strengthens our determination to lead the way in what we do. It reflects the stability with which the organization operates, the quality of service and our commitment to reliability.
Answer: For us, it is not a matter of comparison with other organizations, but the result of a long-term effort to support Cyprus with modern technology, professionalism and commitment to transparency.
Seamless course
It was recently preceded by the departure of Mr. Neocleous from the position of Chief Executive Officer and the organization is already in the process of selecting his replacement. Does this pending issue affect Cyta at all?
N. Stylianou's answer: It does not affect it, in the following sense: One of the strengths of every individual leader, as Mr. Neocleous was, is to strengthen Cyta's resilience, both by implementing important strategic projects and by empowering the people and teams that will implement them. In this way, today, our already trained staff trusts the Organization, works consistently and professionally and supports its course on a daily basis. This is what ensures continuity and results.
Answer: Cyta has learned to work with a long-term perspective and this is deeply rooted in its DNA: Clear goals, stable teams and a culture of cooperation that is not affected by changes in people. The pending position of Chief Executive Officer does not disorient us from our direction. Our teams know very well the framework in which we operate, trust the Organization and continue their work with consistency and professionalism. What makes Cyta stand out is its ability to remain stable, goal-oriented and close to the country.
The projects to come
What are the major projects – investments that Cyta is currently "running" and what importance do you attach to them for the implementation of your overall strategy for the coming years?
Answer of G. Metzakis: Our investments focus on specific directions. First, the continuous technological evolution of our networks. Second, the digital modernization of our customer service, so that they have the best possible experience when they come into contact with us. All this supports our greatest strategic pursuit: To ensure the evolution and progress of the entire Organization.
Although competition is demanding in the field of communications, Cyta remains the organization that "afflicts" the Ministry of Finance, the Tender Review Authority, the parliamentary committees and the Audit Office the least of all public organizations. How does Cyta itself assess its financial situation, its results for 2024 and the indications for financial performance in 2025?
Answer of N. Stylianou: Our financial results remain strong and on the rise. The management of our resources is disciplined, while the indications for 2025 are very positive. Cyta operates with stability, not only without burdening or delaying the state apparatus, but enabling us to continue to invest confidently in infrastructure and technology that create lasting value for the country by upgrading it on the map of European and global connectivity.
Customers and selection criteria
To what extent has the customer response been satisfactory from the experience of working with Cyta? What are the 2-3 main criteria for choosing Cyta from new customers? How great is the mobility of customers between the companies that offer these services?
Answer of N. Stylianou: There is mobility in the market, as everywhere, but the data show that, in an environment that is becoming more and more competitive, the relationship of trust with our customers remains stable and resilient.
Answer of G. Metzakis: Cyta's customers show a very high degree of satisfaction with their overall experience of working with us. Brand Health's findings show us that Cyta leads in critical indicators such as reliability, network quality and customer experience, components that constantly strengthen the relationship with the public. The choice of Cyta is mainly based on three factors: the top-notch reliability of our infrastructure, the human and substantial service we offer at every touchpoint, and the technological stability, innovation and rich content that differentiate Cyta and enhance the value for money perceived by consumers.
When the installation of the Fiber network was announced, it was treated by society as a very ambitious and difficult goal. We notice that you have progressed at a considerable speed, expanding Fiber even to remote villages and remote areas. How is the completion of this program progressing? What does the recent European award at the European Digital Connectivity Awards 2025 mean to you?
Answer of G. Metzakis: The nationwide development of the Fiber network is progressing rapidly, including in remote communities, in which we plan to have completed our project by March 2026. The European distinction at the European Digital Connectivity Awards 2025 confirms that Cyprus is recognized for the quality of its digital infrastructure. It is an important recognition for Cyta, but especially for our country, and shows that Cyprus can lead the technologically advanced countries of Europe, with connectivity infrastructure that meets the highest standards.
The acquisition of LCA1
How important and how will Cyta's acquisition, last May, of Simplex's LCA1 data center in Larnaca be exploited? Are you planning other investments in this area?
Answer of G. Metzakis: It is a move of strategic importance. LCA1 is the largest private data center in the country, designed to Tier III specifications, and strengthens our position in providing high availability services.
It is now a key part of our cloud and security service infrastructure. As far as future investments are concerned, we plan to create a new, "green" data center, which will be based on modern energy efficiency technologies and will follow international safety and availability standards. Our goal is to further strengthen Cyprus' position as a regional data hub and provide businesses and organizations with infrastructure that meets the growing needs for secure, reliable, and sustainable data hosting.
We read in a press release of the organization that "Cyta is the first public sector organization to implement modern evaluation and transparent staff development". What does this mean in practice? What are the relationships of management and senior management with the trade unions in the organization?
Answer of N. Stylianou: Regarding the evaluation, at Cyta since 2020, for the first time we have implemented and continue to apply, a system based on clear, objective criteria and goal setting. In terms of promotion, in 2024 we implemented for the first time a meritocratic promotion system, for Directors and Heads of Departments, which included Evaluation Centers from an independent agency. We believe that the result of these recent promotions strengthens Cyta's leadership team.
In addition, we saw women occupy 50% of new positions of responsibility, which shows that opportunities are truly equal. After all, we have been certified as an "Equality Employer" by the competent state body, which also confirms institutionally that our policies are being implemented substantially.
Our relations with the trade unions are functional, with constant communication and respect for their role. They make a significant contribution to the formation of a healthy work environment and actively support the organization's efforts to evolve. There is a common approach to most issues and a continuous willingness to cooperate. Everyone's goal is the progress of Cyta and the development of its people and this is reflected in our daily operation.
What does "new generation infrastructure" mean?
We often hear about investments in "new generation infrastructure". What exactly does this mean and what are you preparing for this choice of organization?
Answer of N. Stylianou: Investments in new generation infrastructure concern the networks and platforms that will support the digital economy of Cyprus for the next decade. For us, this means, firstly, accelerating the deployment of FTTH nationwide, so that every household and business has real access to optical fiber.
Second, the evolution of 5G towards an innovation platform that will enable smart cities, IoT and low-latency services for businesses.
At the same time, we are strengthening the country's international interconnection through upgraded submarine cables and data infrastructure, leveraging Cyprus' strategic position as a regional data hub.
These investments are not only technical: they are a foundation for the competitiveness of the economy and for providing world-class services to citizens and businesses.
What is the message you want to send about the future of Cyta and its role in the country?
Answer G. Metzakis: Cyta's future is based on maintaining technological superiority, strengthening the leadership in the adoption of new technologies, ensuring resilience and operational excellence and investing in the development of human resources.
In this way, we will be able to take advantage of the opportunities we will have to strengthen the use of technology for the good of the country and to raise relevant indicators of Cyprus in Europe. Along with this commitment, we will be able to offer businesses and citizens services that truly support their growth. The trust of the people gives us strength to continue with the same passion.
Answer of N. Stylianou: Cyta has proven that it can operate with stability, transparency and consistency, even in times of change. Our course is based on teamwork and the deep knowledge that exists at every level of the Organization. We have confidence in our teams and the way they respond to challenges.
