The Limassol District Court imposed a 4-month prison sentence on the 24-year-old, who was accused of an obscene act. The Syrian was arrested last October, following a complaint that on August 24, 2025, he committed an indecent act in a public place, under the bridge to the pedestrian street of the coastal road, in the area of Amathus.

The complainant recorded the 24-year-old on video, as well as the registration numbers of his vehicle. His arrest took place in October, after the uproar caused by citizens' posts on social media, regarding incidents of harassment and attacks against women in the coastal area of Amathus.

In its decision, the Court took into account the circumstances of the commission of the offenses, as well as the mitigating factors concerning the person of the accused. At the same time, he noted that he took into account the facts of the case, as well as the seriousness of the offenses that had been committed, before reaching the imposition of the sentence. He also considered the possibility of suspending the sentence imposed, but rejected the request, pointing out that "all the facts and all the circumstances of the case cannot outweigh the public interest, which requires the imposition of dissuasive penalties, in view of the particular seriousness of the offense committed, but also the exacerbation in which such offenses are located".

The Nicosia District Court gave a second chance to a mother who had admitted that more than two years ago she hit her then 10-year-old daughter on the head, grabbing her by the back of the head.

Although it sentenced her to three months in prison, however, the Court suspended the execution of the sentence for three years, deciding, due to her personal circumstances, to finally give her a second chance, "so that she can work to restore her relationship with her minor child, but also so that her older child with whom she lives is not adversely affected". He called on the accused to seize the opportunity given to her to stop the cycle of domestic violence.

According to the decision of the district judge P. Agapitos, "the handling of cases related to domestic violence is my daily occupation. Despite the passage of almost 25 years since the phenomenon was highlighted as socially unacceptable through case law, the frequency of committing does not seem to have decreased."

According to the Court, there is no doubt that the defendant's attack on her minor child is, in itself, a heinous act, since it is directed against the most vulnerable member of the family, the child. Especially when the attack caused - according to the facts - mental damage to the minor, to the extent that she developed a parent-child problem disorderThe examination at the A&E may not have shown that the then ten-year-old child had external injuries, but it remains to be seen whether the mental injuries, which, scientifically proven, he carries, are going to heal, the Court noted. The fact that, always according to the facts, this is not the first incident of violence against the minor complainant also contributes to the Court's concern.

Finally, the decision emphasizes that the seriousness of the offense is indisputable. Similarly, the need for general deterrence. However, as I mentioned above, the need for special deterrence is not, in this case, imperative in view of the elapsed period of time from the events and the behaviour of the accused after the commission until today.

"Her clean criminal record, combined with her admission before me, further show that she has repented. An important element in the examination of the issue of suspension is – always in combination with the above mitigating circumstances – the state of mental health of the accused, which is presented as burdened. Bearing in mind that the parent-child relationship has already been disturbed, I consider that any immediate imprisonment of the Accused would probably have had an even more adverse effect on her relations with her children," the judge concluded.

The Famagusta District Court yesterday sentenced a 37-year-old man to 14 months in prison after he was found guilty of the offenses of animal mistreatment and illegal stay in the Republic.

This is a case that was revealed on the afternoon of May 7, 2025, after information was received by the Police about the dismemberment of an animal in the parking lot of an apartment building in free Famagusta.

Members of the Police immediately went to the scene, where they found a dismembered animal, as well as tools used for the act. The animal, according to the Veterinary Services, was identified as a kangaroo.

During the examinations, it also emerged that the convicted person was illegally residing on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, following the rejection of his asylum application in 2022.

The imposition of a prison sentence for an animal abuse case is a clear and resounding signal that such acts are treated with the utmost seriousness and that the law is strictly enforced, without any tolerance.

The Cyprus Police, and in particular the Animal Police, in close cooperation with the Veterinary Services, continues with consistency and determination to investigate any complaint concerning abuse, illegal possession or any form of violence against animals.

The protection and welfare of animals is an integral part of public safety and respect for the values of our society. No crime against animals is "negligible" and none goes unpunished.

The Police calls on the public to continue to cooperate and report any relevant information immediately, contributing in practice to the prevention and fight against such phenomena.
