AKTI participates in a bi-communal project for the utilization of green waste in agriculture. This is the ALL4Compost project, a new European project for the circular utilization of pruning and livestock waste and the empowerment of civil society.
The project, according to a press release, begins in the area of Lefka, with the participation of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers as the lead body, the AKTI Center for Studies and Research, and the Lefke Society for the Preservation of the Environment and Ecology. The All4Compost project, funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot Community, "aspires to bring to the Turkish Cypriot community an innovative, economically viable, participatory and locally adapted model of agricultural pruning management and compost production, based on the active participation of civil society", the press release states.
With the creation of a "Compost Community" in the area of occupied Lefka as a central axis, "the project aims to bring together farmers, local authorities, organizations and citizens to co-shape and co-own a functional system for collecting agricultural pruning and converting it into high-quality and low-cost compost". Farmers will provide their organic residues and receive ready-made compost in return, reducing their costs and actively contributing to reducing the environmental footprint of their activity.
AKTI, utilizing its experience in green waste co-management and inter-communal cooperation, will transfer its know-how to the Turkish Cypriot community, contributing to the design, technical guidance and adaptation of the model to the specificities of the region. As stated in the press release, the area of Lefka, with a long agricultural history and acute environmental challenges, faces serious problems of accumulation of green waste, burning pruning and soil degradation.
