The amendments to the legislation on carriers were brought to the Plenary Session of the Parliament today and approved unanimously.
During the examination of the regulations by the Transport Committee, the competent Ministry explained that two points are changing.
The first concerns the increase of the maximum height of trucks from 4 meters to 4.47. The second concerns the variable length of the bogies, which is in line with the European regulation.
The Department of Public Works explained that the minimum height on the highway is 4.70, so the regulations do not affect the Department. For its part, the Police expressed their agreement with the amendment of the legislation. "This is how the gaps that had become apparent are filled," he said.
POVEK clarified that with the amendment of the regulations, illegal trafficking will cease. As mentioned, there were complaints from the Police, while at the same time it was emphasized that in the event of an accident, no insurance covered the driver.
The difference of 7.5 points
However, the EAC objected, as its spokesman explained that the EAC's power cables reach up to 5.20 meters. He stressed that, according to British safety standards, there must be a safety distance of 80 points, so the height drops to 4.40. Continuing, he said that there may be cases where a cable will come loose.
In his intervention, AKEL MP Costas Costa underlined that the difference is 72.5 points instead of 80. "We would have an issue if the cables were close to 4.47, but in this case the cables are 5.20," he said.
The EAC spokesman came back, stressing that he cannot ensure that 7.5 points less are safe under any weather conditions. "I can't say that 7.5 points is nothing and tomorrow we have an accident," he said.
Mr. Costa, in a new intervention, explained that it is not 7.5 points but 80.
In the end, the representative of Cablenet took the floor, who stated that its cables are at 4.80, so there is a difference of 30 points from the height of the trucks. However, she made it clear that her cables are not electric.
