TEACHERS STRIKE OVER EVALUATION REFORM AS GOVERNMENT WARNS OF €60m EU FUNDING LOSS

 in-cyprus 19 November 2025

Secondary school teachers walked off the job from 7.30am to 11am on Wednesday in protest against a proposed evaluation law, as Parliament prepares to debate the controversial bill.

The Education Committee of Parliament is scheduled to begin article-by-article discussion of the bill at 2pm Wednesday. Teachers’ unions have called for a demonstration outside Parliament.

The government appealed to teachers on Tuesday to take a responsible stance, warning that failure to implement the reform will result in the loss of €60 million from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Fund.

School buses disrupted

Morning school bus routes will not operate on Wednesday due to the strike. Parents have been asked to make arrangements to bring their children to school at 11am after the strike ends. Afternoon bus routes will run normally.

Pupils who do not attend school will be marked absent for registration purposes only, and the absences will not count against them.
