The proposal of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works with support measures for citizens whose vehicle fitness certificate has been cancelled due to non-replacement of an airbag, provided that they have already arranged an appointment, was approved yesterday by the Council of Ministers.
According to an announcement by the Ministry, the decision is part of the Government's social policy framework and aims to facilitate citizens who have shown consistency by planning the replacement of the defective part in time, but are affected due to delays in the delivery of spare parts to companies.
Based on data provided by the companies to the Department of Road Transport, until October 31, 2025, the certificate of suitability for 10,782 vehicles has been suspended, while 4,327 appointments for replacement have already been arranged by the end of January 2026.
Recognizing the difficulties that arise, especially for citizens belonging to vulnerable social groups, the Council of Ministers approved the following support measures:
- Granting free public transport tickets to all vehicle owners who have arranged an appointment for corrective action by the end of January 2026, their vehicle is immobilized and they do not have another vehicle.
- One-time financial support of €100 per week to vehicle owners who have arranged an appointment for corrective measures by the end of January 2026 and belong to the categories of EEE beneficiaries, low-income pensioners, single parents and large families.
- One-time financial support of €100 per week to disabled vehicle owners who have arranged an appointment for corrective action by the end of January, 2026, their vehicle is immobilized and they do not have another vehicle.
The provision of support will be made upon application to the Department of Road Transport, and after it is established that the prescribed conditions are met.
The announcement notes that this decision strengthens the state's effort to protect the daily lives of citizens, without overlooking the main goal: ensuring road safety and the protection of human life, which are a non-negotiable priority of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
