PARLIAMENT VOTED TO INCREASE THE ROADWORTHINESS TEST FEE FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS

 Filenews 6 November 2025

The increase in the roadworthiness test fee for passenger and light commercial vehicles was voted by the Plenary Session of the Parliament.

Based on the new regulation, the fee paid to private vehicle technical inspection centers (IKTEO) increases from €35 to €43, while to public vehicle technical inspection centers (KEMO) from €40 to €46. The increase concerns motor vehicles of category M1 (passenger cars with up to 8 passenger seats, not including the driver) and N1 (trucks with a gross weight of up to 3,500 kg).

The law was passed with 40 votes in favour and one against the Member of Parliament for Limassol, Andreas Themistocleous, while an amendment was also passed by the Member of Parliament of DIPA-Cooperation, Marinos Mousiouttas, for the revision of the fees every eight years.

Mr. Mousiouttas stated that the legislation is the result of an agreement between all stakeholders, pointing out that the last change in pricing was made in 2007. He added that the Parliament had repeatedly received suggestions on the issue. He proposed a law to add a provision so that every eight years the competent Technical Committee would examine any revision of the fees and submit a relevant proposal to the Parliament.

The Member of Parliament of DIKO, Chrysanthos Savvidis, stated that the bill had occupied the Transport Committee several times and characterized its passage as correct and the relevant amendment in the right direction.

AKEL MP, Giorgos Loukaidis, said that his party, although it does not fully agree with the increase, will vote in favour of the bill. He also said that they had requested a postponement so that there could be a consultation with the Minister of Transport, in order to reduce the burden that the citizens will shoulder. He called on the Government to consider reducing the administrative cost of €5 or the VAT rate. He explained that, although the Minister responded positively, the procedures were time-consuming. Regarding the amendment, he said that they will not vote in favour of it, since the respective Government has the right to revise the fees whenever it wishes.

In response, Mr. Mousiouttas clarified that, if for extraordinary reasons a review of the fees is needed, this can be done even before the eight-year period. As for the increase that occurred, he said that it is only €8 after 15 years, while regarding AKEL's request for a reduction in administrative costs, he said that if it is eliminated, this cost is not lost, but "will eventually be passed on to the entire population".
