ONE-MONTH EXTENSION FOR IDENTIFICATION OF SIM CARDS AND eSIM PREPAID MOBILE TELEPHONY - 200,000 ARE PENDING - NO FURTHER EXTENSION WILL BE GIVEN

Filenews 6 November 2025 - by Theodora Nikolau

The Parliament voted for a one-month extension in the identification of SIM cards and eSIM prepaid mobile telephony.

In today's Plenary, the relevant proposal of MPs Marinos Mousiouttas and Stavros Papadouris was submitted, declared as urgent and passed into law, with 32 votes in favour, one abstention and one vote against. Its purpose is for the provision of mobile telephony services, to anonymous holders of a SIM subscriber identity card and/or eSIM of Prepaid Mobile Telephony Services, who have not yet declared the identity details of the holder and the corresponding mobile phone number, to be discontinued immediately on December 10, 2025, instead of November 10, 2025, as provided for in the current law.

According to Mr. Mousiouttas, "the Transport Committee monitored the progress of the identification of the cards every fortnight. From September 4, which was at 11%, the last update we had yesterday was at 50-55% identification. There are around 200.000 subscribers who have not yet identified their cards, even though a period of 18 months had been given since the passage of the legislation that expires on the 10th of the month. So we are giving a one-month extension until December 10."

He also reminded that "the card is not only for a telephone line, but cards of this kind also use other vital services, such as elevators for alarms, so a one-month extension is given provided that there will be no further extension".
