MAVROKOLYMPOS - FIRST SMALL WATER FLOWS AFTER REPAIR

Filenews 27 November 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The Mavrokolympos dam is now operationally ready, having successfully passed all the test stages and all the tests that were carried out after the repair works of the significant damage that caused its drainage and began to "receive" in its reservoir the first quantities of water from the heavy rains of the previous two days, even in a very small amount.

Since the beginning of October, the works to repair the major damage that occurred last January have been completed and the dam has successfully passed all the necessary specialized and preventive checks that followed, in order to make it official that it is in full operation. Mavrokolympos is now reconnected to the irrigation network of Paphos and ready to receive the quantities of water that this year's rainfall of the hydrological year will bring. The dam's evacuation system, which caused the major damage and contributed to the loss of all the quantities of water that were stored, has now been restored, while the necessary additional improvement works have been carried out to avoid a future problem.

It is clarified, however, that this dam is connected to the large irrigation project of Paphos, with the source being the refinery in Asprokremmos, but after this year's catastrophic summer for Paphos, there are no surpluses of produced treated water that would allow quantities to flow from the Asprokremmos unit to Mavrokolympos. This will happen when the needs and demand for water from the unit will not be as great as they are today.  Until then, Mavrokolympos expects the rainfall to continue to start filling up again with water for the agriculture use of low-lying western Paphos.
