DOZENS OF ANIMAL LOVERS PROTESTED FOR THE ANIMAL SHELTER IN PAPHOS

 Filenews 14 November 2025

Volunteers and animal lovers in Paphos are looking for a ray of light for the future of 2000 animals, which are hosted at the Paphos Animal Shelter, which is closing after 40 years of operation. During a protest event held today outside the Paphos District Court demanding that the state or local authorities find a solution to the problem, it was announced that next Thursday the representatives of the shelter and the Party for the Animals have been invited to the Municipality of Ierokipia to discuss the issue, after the filing of a lawsuit against the representatives of the shelter.

Dozens of animal lovers and volunteers who work at the shelter holding banners and placards asked for help from the people and the state today, in order to find either a place to move the shelter or a way to rescue the animals it hosts. The president of the Party for the Animals, Kyriakos Kyriakou, who attended and spoke at the event, told "F" that The protesters' request is the suspension of the court order to close the shelter due to nuisance and the finding of an alternative place to accommodate all these animals.

Mr. Kyriakou expressed his optimism that something positive can come out of Thursday's meeting at the Municipal Hall of Ierokiopia.

The volunteer and education manager of the shelter, Irini Diamantopoulou, said for her part that the shelter has been operating for the last about 40 years on land that was granted by the owners for the needs of the volunteers. Now that the owners want their land back, we were waiting for some response to move the shelter and all the animals safely.

According to Ms. Diamantopoulou, the shelter currently hosts about 2000 animals. About 150 are donkeys and horses, while the rest are dogs, cats, goats, bunnies, hedgehogs, piglets and a pony.
