Members of the Traffic Department of the Headquarters and the Special Motorcyclist Platoon carried out a traffic control campaign today from 06:00 to 18:00, on the highways and on the secondary road network of Cyprus.

The operation is part of the Police's efforts to reduce fatal and serious traffic collisions, as well as to cultivate road awareness and strengthen the sense of security of citizens.

During the inspections, 304 complaints emerged about various traffic violations. Especially:

  • 40 drivers were reported for exceeding the speed limit,

Developments were announced by the Police in the case of the fatal car accident in Aglantzia, with the victim being 20-year-old Kyriakos Antoniou from Agios Dometios. The Assistant Director of Traffic Police of the Headquarters, Haris Evripidou, spoke on state television and stressed that it is now obvious who is responsible for the accident, with all the documentation required and the offenses that arise.

Haris Evripidou stated that the evidence has been sent to the Legal Service along with some instructions and the answer is awaited. In relation to arrests in traffic collisions, he explained that they are made when there is preliminary testimony about the responsibility of one of the drivers. There the driver is arrested for specific reasons, such as not escaping abroad, not leaking testimony and not destroying evidence. He added that because the offense was not self-inflictedthe speed had to be documented with some tests. "There was no expediency," he stressed about the non-arrest. For his part, the spokesman of the Police, Byron Byronos, told Sigma that the file was returned to the Police, because the Legal Service was asked to take two additional actions.

It is recalled that as Filenews had written since October 2, the Police recommended to the Legal Service the criminal prosecution of the 24-year-old involved in the fatal car accident. Regarding the circumstances of the accident, the unfortunate Kyriakos was moving on Larnakos Avenue and was heading from the roundabout of the University to Nicosia. The fatal collision occurred when he attempted to turn right. The 24-year-old's car, which had priority, allegedly developed breakneck speed and the fatal collision followed.

in-cyprus

The Hind Rajab Foundation has filed a legal complaint before Cypriot authorities requesting the arrest of Israeli soldier Sharon Dawit over his alleged involvement in acts during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The filing, submitted on 11 November 2025 by human rights lawyer Nikoletta Charalambidou on behalf of the foundation, is based on an investigative report that includes an image verified by HRF showing Dawit posing beside a naked, blindfolded, handcuffed man in Gaza.

Complaint details deployment and documented image

The case details Dawit’s deployment with the Givati Brigade from December 2023 to September 2024, according to the foundation.

On 2 January 2024, Dawit allegedly posted a photomontage on Instagram, including a photograph where he sits armed in an armchair whilst a naked Palestinian man kneels before him, handcuffed and blindfolded.

The foundation, as stated, authenticated this image using digital forensic tools, and concluded that it depicts conduct the organisation considers to violate the Rome Statute and the UN Convention Against Torture.

The filing requests Cypriot authorities to act under Article 5(1)(e)(v) of the Cypriot Criminal Code, which provides for universal jurisdiction over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed outside Cypriot territory.

The submission invokes the Republic’s obligations under the Rome Statute, the Geneva Conventions and Law 235/1990.

Brigade deployment and alleged conduct patterns

The Givati Brigade, to which Dawit belongs, was among the first Israeli army units to enter Gaza after 7 October 2023.

The foundation’s investigation states that the brigade played a role in operations involving attacks on civilians, destruction of residential areas, looting and forced displacement.

The foundation states that the acts captured in Dawit’s photograph reflect what it describes as a broader pattern of conduct. The organisation and its partners have documented the use of what they describe as stress positions and humiliation methods.

“This case is not symbolic — it is procedural and concrete,” said Natacha Bracq, the foundation’s head of litigation.

“Torture is one of the clearest and most universally condemned crimes in international law. Sharon Dawit’s act, captured and publicised by himself, is the visual proof of a system built on humiliation and domination”.

The filing outlines that Dawit’s alleged conduct constitutes what the foundation describes as violations under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, including allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The foundation’s report references the UN Commission of Inquiry’s September 2025 findings, which concluded that Israeli forces have committed acts meeting the legal threshold for genocide in Gaza, including systematic torture and sexualised violence against detainees.

Foundation seeks accountability

“Cyprus must decide what side of history it stands on,” said Dyab Abou Jahjah, director general of the Hind Rajab Foundation.

“If suspected war criminals can land on European soil, holiday freely and leave without consequence, then Europe’s commitment to justice is an illusion. Cyprus cannot become a safe haven for perpetrators of genocide — and this filing is a test of its resolve to uphold international law”.

The foundation states that this case is part of a wider effort to pursue accountability for alleged crimes committed during Israel’s ongoing campaign in Gaza.

The organisation’s team has filed or supported multiple legal actions across Europe and at the International Criminal Court, using what it describes as verifiable evidence collected through open-source intelligence, witness testimonies and forensic documentation.

“Justice begins when impunity ends,” Bracq added. “Our work is to bridge that gap — with evidence, law and the courage to act where others remain silent”.
