The position of the Paphos Municipal Council on the issue of transforming the parking lot on Konstantinou Kanari Street into a square area, based on a proposal by the Mayor, is negative in an overwhelming majority.
This is emphasized by the municipal councillor of DIKO in the Municipality of Paphos, Agathi Savvidou, pointing out that her position and that of the majority of the municipal councillors during the recent plenary session that discussed the issue, is that such a decision will intensify the already serious parking problem in the city center. ''This position of mine follows the remarks I have already made for a long time, regarding the lack of available parking spaces in our city'', she said. ''Paphos needs practical solutions that serve its citizens, employees and visitors and not decisions that will intensify the already serious parking problem in the centre'', she pointed out.
Ms. Savvidou has already submitted a proposal for the creation of a multi-storey parking lot in the center of Paphos, arguing that it is a realistic proposal with long-term benefit for the city. A multi-storey parking lot will provide substantial solutions to the chronic problem of lack of parking spaces, will enhance commercial and social activity, reduce traffic congestion and will contribute to the sustainable development of our historic and commercial center, he stressed.
The proposal can focus on the utilization of existing public parking spaces, with absolute respect for the character of the area and after technical and economic viability studies, suggests Agathi Savvidou. Funding can come from state resources or European funds, through urban development and sustainable mobility programs, he concludes.
