MAVROKOLYMPOS COLLECTS WATER AGAIN

 Pafos Live 1 October 2025

The damage that had occurred last January, at the Mavrokolympos dam, has been repaired, according to the President of EOA Paphos Charalambos Pittokopitis and the District Engineer of the Water Development Department Haris Kasioulis. Mr. Pittokopitis stated that after the information he received from the Water Development Department, the repair of the damage that had been observed at the Mavrokolimbos dam has now been restored. More flexible dam operating procedures have now been implemented, so that similar problems that have occurred in the past can be dealt with more flexibly and more effectively, he said. The dam is now ready to receive the first quantities of water from the upcoming winter season, he added.

The water from the Mavrokolimbos dam is used for irrigation purposes of the western low-lying area of Paphos and in particular the communities of Chloraka, Kissonerga and Pegeia, as the President of the EOA Paphos said.

He added that quantities of water from the tertiary treatment of the biological unit of the Paphos sewerage system were also stored in this dam. Asked about this, Mr. Pittokopitis said that the capacity at the Mavrokolympos dam is 1.4 million. cubic meters of water. The District Engineer of the Paphos WDD, Haris Kasioulis, referred to the repair of the damage to the Mavrokolympos dam, adding that it can now store water.

According to Mr. Kasioulis, the damage to the dam had occurred on January 19, 2025 and was due to a failure of the ventilation duct of the dam's evacuation system. In the basic planning of the Department, taking into account the very difficult conditions of drought and water management, the primary goal was set to restore the Mavrokolympos dam before the start of the upcoming winter season, he continued.

In this context, he said, the works proceeded and were executed in the first 15 days of September and "since September 15, the dam is considered to be in operation and has been connected to the irrigation network of the Paphos government water project. What is expected now is the rains."

Because it is interconnected with the irrigation network of Paphos, Mavrokolympos has the peculiarity of being able to store quantities of water from both Asprokremmos, but also from the recycled water reuse system which is channelled into the irrigation network, he concluded.
