The annual awareness march on drunk driving organized by the "Dr. Yiota Demetriou – The Dancing Queen Foundation" returns for the 17th consecutive year, on Sunday, November 2, 2025, on the seafront promenade of Limassol. The action, with the slogan "I prefer to walk rather than drink and drive", aims to convey a strong message about road safety and to honour the memory of Dr. Yiota Demetriou.
The Foundation was founded in 2009, in memory of Dr. Yiota Demetriou, who lost her life in a car accident in New York, in November 2008. The purpose of the Foundation is to continue its vision of supporting children with psychological or emotional difficulties and their families, through treatments, assessments and counselling programs.
As part of its work, the Foundation has supported over 320 children and families, with a total amount of over €750,000, thanks to the support of local government, volunteers, specialists and sponsors.
This year's course starts opposite the archaeological site of Amathus and ends at the Limassol Molos, covering a distance of 10 kilometers. At the finish line, there will be a festive event, with water, soft drinks, coffee, small dishes, a live link with music, a photo booth for online commemorative photos, information material and certificates of participation.
Participation is open to all. Registrations are made until October 31 on https://dancingqueenfoundation.com/ website, but also on site on the day of the march, at the starting point. Also, one can make a donation through the website or become a sponsor. Every participation — small or large — becomes part of a chain of life and love, which supports the children and keeps Yiota's vision alive.
As the president of the Foundation, Katerina Chrysostomou, notes, the goal is "for the finish to be a celebration of life, full of positive energy, smiles and the message that prevention and safety can have joy, rhythm and participation".
"Our message remains simple and strong: 'I'd rather walk, than drink and drive.' Every step of the way is a promise of change; A reminder that love, conscience and responsibility can lead us further away from alcohol, neglect and loss"
The march began as an act of love and honour towards Yiota and evolved over the years into a pan-Cypriot institution of awareness. Every year, hundreds of people participate, proving how society can change through memory, empathy and collective action.
