Filenews 30 October 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The green light is being given one after the other by the state departments and services involved to the proposal of the founder and CEO of the Korantina Homes group, George Ioannou, to fully assume the construction cost of the construction of a Pegeia Museum, which will house the important antiquities that are constantly coming to light from the archaeological dig in the area.

Exclusive information from "F" states that in the last two months Mr. Ioannou's proposal has been examined by all the services involved and the opinions that have been submitted to date, as well as the preliminary estimates, are all positive. The preparatory work for the creation of an Archaeological Museum in Agios Georgios Pegeia, which will be a total donation of Mr. Ioannou, is now considered to be at an advanced stage, since in the months that have passed since the submission of the proposal, the preliminary discussions with the competent state departments have already been completed, while the donor company has also prepared the drafts of the major project. In this direction, the first meeting with the Deputy Minister of Culture has already taken place to officially inform her about Mr. Ioannou's donation.

Our information was confirmed by the Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, pointing out that after these first contacts, the official approval is expected from the competent state departments in order to start the implementation of the major project. He expressed the hope that the political decisions for the implementation of the large donation will be completed soon, given the positive opinion that seems to be submitted by everyone.

The Mayor of Akamas also referred to the issue during the inauguration ceremony of the renovated square area and buildings in Agios Georgios Pegeia, on Wednesday night, stating that the museum will be erected in a neighbouring area, under the responsibility of the Department of Antiquities.

The new museum was announced during the conference held last March at the tourist resort of Cap St Georges for the antiquities that have been discovered on Cape Drepanon of Agios Georgios Pegeia, the founder and CEO of the Korantina group, George Ioannou, announcing that he will bear the full cost for the major cultural project in the area of Pegeia, budgeted at more than €1.5 million.

The archaeological museum, in the area of Agios Georgios, is estimated to be absolutely necessary in order to house and highlight the important antiquities of Cape Drepanon, which in recent years has been constantly brought to light by the archaeological dig.

The importance of the archaeological findings of the area was highlighted by the Greek professor and head of the archaeological excavations of the area, Mr. Bakirtzis, who stressed that the area has been inhabited since the early Christian years, but flourished during the period of Justinian, i.e. during the 6th century AD. Especially for the baptistery found in the area, Professor Bakirtzis stressed that it was found that Christians from all regions of the Mediterranean were baptized in it.

The Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, spoke of a project that will brighten the archaeological past of the area and highlight aspects of the history of Pegeia and the wider region that today are only partially offered to its millions of visitors over the years.
