The developments surrounding the murder of Stavros Demosthenous in Limassol, a case that shocks the whole of Cyprus and has put the Police on alert, are rapid. After intensive investigations, the investigators of the TAE Limassol handcuffed on Saturday night a 45-year-old Greek Cypriot from Nicosia, against whom an arrest warrant had been issued. The man is considered a key person, as he is the owner of a motorcycle that was found hidden in an area of eastern Limassol and seems to be connected to the escape motorcycle of the perpetrators.
The motorcycle was taken to the Limassol Police Department for scientific examinations, with the findings expected to shed light.
According to information, the suspect interrogated made various allegations regarding the possession and use of the motorcycle, which are being evaluated by the investigators of the TAE Limassol.
The 45-year-old is expected to be brought before the Limassol District Court today, Sunday, where the Police will request his detention to facilitate investigations.
At the same time, actions continue to locate and arrest other persons who may be involved in the case.
As reported by Filenews, a second vehicle has been put under the microscope of the investigators, which is estimated to have been used by the perpetrators to escape after the murder. The investigations are expanding in all directions, while the Police are examining videotaped material from closed surveillance circuits in various parts of the city, looking for evidence that will lead to the full investigation of the crime.
It is recalled that the perpetrators, after the execution of Stavros Demosthenous, abandoned and set fire to the van they used when committing the crime, in order to eliminate their traces.
According to the investigators' estimates, they then escaped on a large and dark-coloured scooter.
The next 24 hours are considered decisive for the course of the investigations, as well as the analysis of the evidence and the possibility of making new arrests.
It is recalled that yesterday the autopsy on the victim's body was performed at the Nicosia General Hospital, by the medical examiner Nicolas Charalambous. According to our information, at least two bullets hit the victim in the head, while based on the findings of the medical examiner, the death is due to a severe craniocerebral injury caused by firearm bullets.
Death ambush 500 meters away from his home
Time stopped around 09:30 on Friday morning, when Stavros Demosthenous received a barrage of fire while he was in a luxury rental vehicle, in the passenger seat, about 500 meters from his home, in the area of Sfalagiotissa. The vehicle was driven by his 18-year-old son, when during their course, a white van entered in front of them and stopped their course, forcing the young man to slow down. Then, the doors of the van opened and one of the perpetrators started shooting at Demosthenous, managing to fatally hit him.
After completing their mission, the perpetrators fled, fleeing the scene. A few minutes later, a vehicle with the same description was found on fire in the area of Germasogeia. The examinations revealed that it is the same vehicle used in the execution. As established by the police investigations, the van had been declared stolen on September 4 in the province of Nicosia.
Immediately after the attack, the victim's son, despite the shock he suffered, tried to drive and transport his father to the Hospital. As they were moving on the highway, at the height of Tsirio, their vehicle was involved in a traffic accident, as a result of which it was immobilized. According to reliable information from "F", the 18-year-old stopped a passing citizen and asked him to take them to the Limassol General Hospital. The citizen responded immediately, but by the time the victim arrived at the hospital, he was already dead. The same sources report that Demosthenous received at least two bullets in the head.
