The Municipality of Larnaca, the Department of Environment and the Game and Fauna Service express strong concern about the new incident of illegal entry of vehicles into the Larnaca Salt Lake, where two cars were found immobilized in the protected wetland.
In a statement, the Municipality of Larnaca emphasizes that the Larnaca Salt Lake is one of the most important natural treasures of Cyprus and is part of the NATURA 2000 Network and the Ramsar Treaty, with great importance for wildlife and especially for the waterfowl it hosts. Since 1997, as he notes, it has been under strict protection under national and European legislation.
Thus, any activity that may directly or indirectly affect the ecosystem, species or habitats of the species, is an offence under the Protection and Management of Nature and Wildlife Laws of 2003 to 2015 and the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game Laws of 2003 to 2021.
"Despite repeated suggestions, information campaigns and signage in the area, some continue to ostentatiously ignore the rules and take unacceptable actions that endanger the ecosystem of the Salt Lake," it added.
The Municipality of Larnaca, the Department of Environment and the Game and Fauna Service emphasize that such behaviours that affect our natural heritage are not acceptable and all Authorities in cooperation should impose the sanctions and corrective actions provided by law to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
It is noted that the issue was highlighted in a report by "Dialogos", according to which both vehicles are registered with the same owner who is absent abroad and was used by his son. The second attempted to cross the Salt Lake, as a result of which his vehicle was immobilized due to the mud, after the rains of the last few days softened the ground. Then he decided to call for help, as a result of which the second vehicle arrived in Aliki as well, which also sank in the mud.
Already, as emphasized, the Ministry of Environment has imposed an out-of-court penalty of €2000 for an intervention / harmful activity that degraded the habitat, under the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game Laws.
For its part, the Department of Environment is investigating ways to immediately remove the vehicles, which are trapped within the Salt Lake, in cooperation with other services, in order to avoid further affecting the wetland.
The Police were also informed about the incident last Wednesday.
