A major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage that affected dozens of popular websites and applications is showing signs of improvement, with AWS reporting “significant signs of recovery” in their systems.
The outage, which began around 8am UK time (midnight Pacific Time), originated in Amazon’s crucial US-East-1 region in North Virginia, causing widespread disruptions to services including Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, banking apps, and even government services.
According to Downdetector data, the spike in reported issues that appeared this morning has now started to decline across multiple services. At its peak, AWS received nearly 6,000 reports in the US and 4,000 in the UK, but these numbers have dropped significantly, indicating fewer users are experiencing problems.
The issue appears to have stemmed from DNS resolution problems with Amazon’s DynamoDB service, which then cascaded to affect numerous other AWS services and the thousands of websites and applications that rely on them. AWS engineers have been working on “multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery,” according to the company’s status page.
While some services are still experiencing intermittent issues and latency as traffic backlogs are processed, many popular platforms like Roblox, Epic Games Store, and Fortnite appear to be returning to normal operation.
