PRICE OBSERVATORY - 21 PRODUCTS RECORDED INCREASES, AND 21 DECREASES

 Filenews 22 September 2025

Significant changes in the prices of basic products were recorded by the Price Observatory for August 2025, with the Consumer Protection Service pointing out strong fluctuations by category. The largest month-on-month increase is found in fresh vegetables and greens, which increased by +49.3% compared to July (however, they remain reduced by -30.7% compared to August 2024). On the contrary, fresh fish and molluscs recorded the most significant decline (-13.4% month-on-month), while frozen molluscs/shellfish also showed a large decrease (-13.0%).

Of the 45 product categories monitored by the Observatory, 21 recorded increases, 21 decreases and three (Cypriot coffee, bread, infant milk) did not change. It is noted that 29 of these 45 categories are also included in the electronic platform "e-kalathi".

More specifically, among the products with an increase compared to the previous month, the following stand out:

• fresh vegetables and greens +49.3% (-30.7% year-on-year),
• LPG cylinder +4.9% (+6.7% compared to August 2024),
• fresh meat +3.8% (+4.7% year-on-year),
• vegetable cooking fat +2.7% (-21.1% compared to August 2024),
• laundry detergents +2.4% (-2.8% year-on-year),
• instant coffee +2.3% (+11.0% year-on-year),
• toilet paper +2.2% (-6.4% year-on-year),

• fabric softeners +1,7% (+5,25% compared to Aug.2024) and
• sanitary napkins +1,1% (-4,2% year-on-year).

On the other hand, among the largest month-on-month decreases are: fresh fish and molluscs -13.4% (+6.0% compared to Aug.2024), frozen molluscs/shellfish -13.0% (+4.5% year-on-year), frozen breaded/pre-cooked fish -3.8% (-13.3% year-on-year), yogurt -1.5% (-4.5% year-on-year), bulgur -1.5% (-5.5% year-on-year), oil -1.4% (-7.8% year-on-year), baby diapers -1.2% (-7.0% year-on-year) and bagels -1.1% (-2.4% compared to Aug.2024).

At the level of broader economic categories, the Service notes a positive change for "Services" (+3,6% compared to Aug.2024), while a decrease is recorded in Electricity (-11,6%), Petroleum Products (-7,3%) and the general category "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" (-3,0%). Agricultural products as a whole showed a decrease of -5.3% year-on-year (although +4.4% compared to July).

The August assessment confirms the trend of de-escalation of inflation during the summer: -0.2% inflation in May, -0.4% in June and -0.9% in both July and August, data that the Consumer Protection Service points to as a significant change in the course of prices.

The Service reminds that the Price Observatories are intended exclusively for the information of consumers and do not constitute a purchase instruction. It also points out that there are qualitative differences between products that are not reflected in the data, so it urges consumers to conduct personal market research before choosing products and points of sale.
