PAPHOS - TOUR OF THE PRESIDENT OF EDEK

Filenews 3 September 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The problems faced by the new District Local Government Organizations were discussed during the visit of the President of EDEK, Nikos Anastasiou, to the Paphos EDA and at the meeting held with its President, Charalambos Pittokopitis and his associates.

Mr. Pittokopitis conveyed to the president of EDEK the issues that concern the Organization mainly regarding water supply, given that there is the peculiarity of the Paphos district not having a central water supply board like the other districts.

In Paphos, he said, each local authority was also a water supply authority, collecting enough money without most of them investing in infrastructure. As a result of this situation, the president of the Paphos EDA stressed, there is now an outdated network under the jurisdiction of the new organization, with serious deficiencies and problems.

Mr. Pittokopitis also referred to licensing issues, informing the president of EDEK that thousands of cases have been taken over by the previous licensing authorities, such as the Town Planning, the Municipalities and the District Administration, at a time when staffing problems are great and it is estimated that by October there will be the necessary improvement.

The president of EDEK undertook to convey the problems and difficulties faced by the EDAs and especially the EDA Paphos that he visited to both the Government and the Parliament. However, he expressed his satisfaction because, as he stressed, he was informed that the new building permits are now being promoted in a satisfactory way, while there is still a problem with the old delayed permits.

Regarding the water system, Mr. Anastasiou noted that the enormous cost that needs to be spent today for the change of the network and for the construction of new reservoirs cannot be borne by the organization, but the State must come to the rescue.
