MAVROKOLYMBOS, READY BEFORE OCTOBER. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHERS?

 Pafos Live 1 September 2025

The failure of the Mavrokolymbos dam, last January, led to a very difficult period for Cyprus in the loss of one and a half million cubic meters of water, valuable for agriculture. Mainly for the banana plantations of Kissonerga and Peyia. According to information, experts are working to repair the dam, before the end of September, and based on all the indications that exist, they will succeed in starting to store water again with the first rains.

The Mavrokolymbou dam is based on the style of the liquid tower, as it is called, which, according to ETEK, was widely applied in the 50s and 60s. Similar dams with the same style, apart from the Mavrokolymbos dam, are those of Polemidia, Pomos, Agia Marina, Argaka, as well as Germasogeia. The question is whether, after the loss of Mavrokolimo, technical checks have been carried out on all dams in the same style in order to prevent similar situations.
