FIA BLOCKADE OF CYPRIOT DRIVERS WITH CANCELLATION OF RACING LICENCES

 Filenews/Goal 26 September 2025

A catapult decision shocks the field of Cypriot motorsport. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has suspended racing licenses issued by the Cyprus Automobile Association (CAA). The decision, communicated yesterday, causes serious turbulence as Cypriot athletes will no longer be able to participate in international events with recognized validity.

What does the FIA decision mean The FIA, reacting to the decision of the Cypriot Government to recognize the Cyprus Automobile Federation as a sports authority, has clarified that it cannot recognize the events held in Cyprus from now on. This means that: 1. All races in Cyprus are classified as “unrecognized competitions”. 2. Competitors will not have the right to obtain an international racing license from the FIA. 3. Participation in such events automatically renders the driver inactive for international events. The position of the Cyprus Automobile Association (CAA) The Cyprus Automobile Association expresses its dissatisfaction with this development, underlining that it is the result of a political decision that weakens Cyprus's position on the international map of motorsports. In its statement, it is emphasized that the FIA, through the CAA, is the only international body authorized to supervise races and licenses. At the same time, the Association calls on the Cypriot State to immediately take initiatives to restore relations with the FIA and prevent further damage to Cypriot drivers, who are at risk of being left out of European and world events. Impact on drivers This decision leaves athletes in the “air”, since without a recognized racing license they cannot take part in international championship races. Essentially, Cyprus risks losing its international presence in motorsports, while athletes who had planned participation abroad must freeze their plans. In communication with the CSO, we were emphasized that repeated efforts were made to resolve the issue. The Cyprus Sports Organization is not going to enter into a public debate and will proceed with actions addressing the FIA.
