Developments emerged regarding the fire that broke out on Thursday night (4/9) in the Troodos area and which seems to have been maliciously set.
According to information from the Police, after examinations and evaluation of information, testimony was obtained that raises reasonable suspicions against a 32-year-old, who was arrested under a court warrant and detained. The same information states that he is a Greek Cypriot.
The 32-year-old is expected to be brought before the Limassol District Court tomorrow for a request for his custody.
Dry oil had been detected
It is recalled that dry oil was found at the scene with which the arsonists attempted to light the fire. The flammable material was taken by the Police for examination.
The incident strongly alarmed the Fire Brigade and the Forestry Department, which have long had information in their hands about the planned action of arsonists, both in the Limassol and Paphos areas. Lately, as reported to us by the Fire Brigade, fires have been breaking out in the evening hours when there is no human activity and in places that are not close to a road.
The same was reported about the fire in mountainous Limassol that burned a huge area and left two dead behind. The Fire Brigade insisted that it was the work of arsonists because it possessed the information about successive fires that broke out in the area.
As we are informed, the fire in the Troodos area near the Square was extinguished by a citizen, while fire trucks from Moniatis rushed to the scene. During the investigations of the firefighters and the men of the Forestry Department, the solid oil was found, which immediately referred to the work of arsonists. The Police were called and picked it up for examination.
Following this development, patrols are intensified in the Troodos area and elsewhere to prevent and avoid the worst. As we were told by a Fire Brigade officer, if Troodos burns down, then woe to us, we will not have green!
Update - The 32-year-old, who was arrested on suspicion of arson in the Troodos State Forest, puts himself on the scene and in the Troodos area. He admitted that he threw three extinguished cigarette butts along the way, however, as he stated in writing during his interrogation, he had no malicious intention to cause a fire.
The 32-year-old was brought on Monday morning (8/9) before the Limassol District Court for the issuance of a detention order for a period of six days. The Court accepted the request of the Police and ordered his pre-trial detention.
As Filenews is informed after the fire, members of the Limassol TAE, the Platra Police Station and the Fire Service rushed to the scene. From the examinations, solid oil was detected and received as evidence.
On September 5, the presumption was examined by a Fire Brigade officer using a special detection device where flammable material was detected.
On the same day, the Assistant Police Director of Limassol, Lefteris Kyriakou, received information from a citizen that on Thursday evening he saw a specific vehicle, which was driven by a young person, throwing an object.
The whistleblower declined to give written testimony, stating that he wishes to remain anonymous.
From the investigations that followed, it was found that the vehicle is registered to a relative of the 32-year-old suspect. Police officers went to his residence, where the 32-year-old reported that he was driving the vehicle. He was then summoned and came to the offices of the Limassol TAE.
In his testimony, the 32-year-old admitted that he was at the scene both temporally and topographically. He mentioned that he works at the old Limassol Hospital and after the end of his shift around 20:00 in the evening, he went to his home.
Because, as he said, it was his birthday but he did not have the expected response from his friends and family, he decided to go for a walk in Troodos to calm down and think.
On the way to Troodos Square, he smoked and threw cigarette butts on the street. Near the Troodos camp, he threw a cigarette butt which, as he claimed, was extinguished. In total, he admitted that he threw three cigarette butts out of the vehicle, which – according to him – were all extinguished.
He also claimed that he had no malicious intent to cause a fire.
For the completion of the examinations, another 22 testimonies are expected to be taken, the suspect's allegations and his movements will be investigated, a written testimony will be received from the informant and footage from closed circuit surveillance in the area will be studied. A case of arson and offenses in relation to the Forestry Law are being investigated against the 32-year-old.
It is recalled that around 9:00 p.m. last Thursday (September 4), a citizen who was driving his vehicle on the Platres-Troodos road noticed a fire on the slope of the road, in an area of three to four square meters, which he extinguished before expanding.
Members of the Police and Fire Brigade who arrived in the area carried out examinations and found that the fire had been maliciously set. Solid oil was found at the scene, which was taken as evidence.

A large operation is underway in a village of Nicosia in connection with the case of the attempted murder and arson of 4 rental company vehicles on the coastal road of Pyla on August 14.
The investigations, according to information from Filenews, are being carried out in a warehouse located in a remote area, where the vehicle used by the perpetrators was located. This warehouse seems to have been used by the criminal network of persons from Syria who were arrested and it is not excluded that it could lead to other criminal acts committed recently.
The focus is on four serious criminal acts committed in July and August in Larnaca (attempted murder of a 49-year-old man in Pyla, attempted murder of a 47-year-old man in Industrial Dromolaxia, shooting of a 25-year-old woman's vehicle in Oroklini and arson of a 42-year-old man's car in Aradippou). It is noted that one of the 17-year-olds arrested is also accused of setting fire to a vehicle in June by a person known to the authorities. The minor was, in fact, conditionally released by the Court.
It is recalled that so far the Police have arrested five people from Syria for the criminal act, which seems to have been organized by the Central Prison, three of whom are alleged to be the perpetrators. They are a 23-year-old man who is suspected of arson of the vehicles, a 17-year-old who is alleged to be the person who shot at the security guard of the premises, a 17-year-old who is believed to be driving the vehicle, a 27-year-old who allegedly handed it over to the perpetrators, as well as a 44-year-old convict in the Central Prison.
The case does not seem to end here, since it is not excluded that there will be other arrests, as the head of the Larnaca TAE, Giorgos Charalambous, stated yesterday. However, it is believed that in relation to the criminal action of Pyla, most of the pieces in the puzzle, which is related to organized crime, were completed, with the motive, as estimated, being the settlement of accounts.
The tip of the thread was found when an 18-year-old from Romania was accidentally arrested on August 22 in Paphos, who is alleged to be the person who stole from Kolossi on August 13 the green saloon car that the perpetrators trafficked. The young man allegedly admitted to selling two stolen cars to the 27-year-old from Syria, who, he said, would be used "in some business" that the 44-year-old convict wanted to do. It is noted that the 18-year-old was released for the Pyla case and was arrested for others related to car thefts.
On August 26, the Larnaca Police Department handcuffed the 27-year-old from Syria after an operation in Anavargos, Paphos. The suspect allegedly arranged, following the instructions of the 44-year-old convict, the purchase and sale of the stolen vehicle, which he handed over to the three perpetrators in a meeting that took place in Paphos a few hours before the criminal act.
Subsequently, the 44-year-old convict, who is serving a short prison sentence for a case of assault and stabbing in Limassol, was arrested and a mobile phone was found in his cell. In the last 24 hours, moreover, the Police put handcuffs on the 23-year-old and the two 17-year-olds who are under eight-day detention.
Under the microscope of the investigators of the case is a screenshot of a closed circuit surveillance, found on the mobile phone of the 27-year-old who is detained, which depicts the place where the car was bought and sold as well as the three perpetrators. In addition, the contents of a total of 7 mobile phones are being investigated, while examinations are also being carried out on clothes and other evidence taken from the homes of the arrested.
It is noted that yesterday and today, after voluntary testimonies obtained by the Police, scenes were made under draconian security measures both in Paphos and in Pyla.
