Two young women, aged 18 and 17, were arrested on Monday in Aradippou, as part of an investigation into a case of theft of a rental car and a sum of €9,300 that was inside it.

According to the Larnaca Police Department, the Larnaca TAE proceeded on Monday on the basis of court warrants, to arrest two girls, one aged 18 and the other 17 years old, people "who are known to the police after dealing with cases of vehicle theft and theft of property from vehicles as well as other valuables".

"The two girls in the recent past were found to be acting with a group of unaccompanied minors," it added.

It is reported that around 07.50 in the morning, a person who resides permanently in the Republic reported that unknown persons stole a rental car that he rented on the same day through an online application and parked outside his home in Larnaca. According to the complaint, he had placed a suitcase with the sum of  €9,300 in the car, with which, as he told the Police, he would pay his children's tuition fees.

The permanent resident "as soon as he found out about the theft, with the help of the rental vehicle tracking application, located the car in Aradippou and near it two young girls unknown to him. The girls admitted to stealing the car, while one of the two handed over €1,300, which they claimed was the only money they found in the vehicle."

A suspended prison sentence for a period of three years was imposed today, Monday (22/9), by the Limassol District Court on the elderly woman accused of an animal abuse case. The Court may have given the defendant a second chance, however, it issued an order prohibiting her from keeping, maintaining, supervising and owning dogs for a period of three years.

The Court imposed various prison sentences for the charges to which the 77-year-old defendant was found guilty, with the longest sentence being that of three months. It examined, however, whether there were grounds for suspending the sentences imposed, taking into account her age, her clean criminal record, the circumstances in which the offences in question were committed, stressing that there had been no deceit, and the long period of time that had elapsed. It held that the above factors are capable of leading to the exercise of the Court's discretion to suspend the sentences imposed, for a period of three years.

As Filenews had written in previous publications, the abused animals owned by the 77-year-old lived under horrible living conditions. The accused was found guilty of the 10 charges related to violations of the Animal Protection and Welfare Act, as 11 dogs were found living under completely inappropriate conditions on her premises.

The tangle of the unprecedented case began to unravel on 17/7/2020, after a complaint was made to the Police by the Veterinary Services of the state. In the first raid that took place at the 77-year-old's premises, three dogs were found living in horrible conditions. The unfortunate animals were dehydrated, suffering from chronic diseases, had wounds on their legs and one of them was lying down.

Despite being transported to a veterinarian by officials of the Veterinary Services, the animal did not make it and succumbed. The other two dogs were found locked in the toilet of the premises.

The investigation of the authorities continued, and in early August 2020 the Police were asked to conduct a new search of the accused's house, which was adjacent to the premises where the first three dogs had been found. During the investigation, eight more dogs were found, also in a deplorable condition.

The case was handled by the Public Prosecutor, Panikos Avramidis.

The new case of abuse of a minor girl, with the domestic worker who was looking after her, is causing shock and revulsion. What the six-year-old's mother saw on her daughter's mobile phone is outrageous.

Following the mother's complaint, investigators from the Juvenile Sexual Abuse Offences Investigation Branch of the Police Headquarters proceeded to arrest the 24-year-old domestic worker from Nepal.

As Filenews is authoritatively informed, the incident took place when the mother had gone to bed on Sunday afternoon to rest and her minor daughter was under the supervision of the suspicious domestic worker in the latter's bedroom.

According to the complaint, the mother in the evening of the same day took her daughter's mobile phone, as she used to do, to check it. There she saw photos and videos, in which the disputed parts of the girl's body were recorded as well as an act of abuse of the child.

After what the mother saw, she asked for an explanation from the 24-year-old domestic worker, who - according to the former's claims - replied that she was "playing with the minor in her bedroom".

The 24-year-old was arrested this morning and brought before the Limassol District Court in the morning, which, in a closed-door procedure, ordered her detention for a period of 8 days.

The investigations into the new shocking case are at a very early stage, while statements are expected to be taken from both the minor girl and the suspect. At the same time, a forensic examination of the minor is to be carried out, while the mobile phones of both the victim and the suspect will go through scientific, forensic and other examinations.

The Police recently arrested two persons, aged 22 and 50, to facilitate investigations, regarding a case of attack on a minibus driver, committed last Saturday in Larnaca.

The attack was recorded in a video posted on social media that depicts an attack on a driver by two people.

According to the data under examination, around 1.45 p.m. of last Saturday, while a 59-year-old driver was driving his bus, on a street in Larnaca, the vehicle in front stopped in front of him. Two people got out of the car, who allegedly approached the 59-year-old, insulted him and beat him.

The two perpetrators then entered their car and left the scene. During their removal, the driver of the car allegedly drove his vehicle against the 59-year-old, who had already got off the bus and was in front of the vehicle, in order to stop them.

From the Police examinations, testimony was obtained against two persons, aged 50 and 22. The two were arrested on warrants and taken into custody to facilitate investigations.

The Larnaca Minor Offences Department is investigating the case.

Developments are expected within the week around the issue of the official of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth accused of indecent assault against a minor and sexual harassment in the workplace, as the Public Service Commission promotes his suspension, while he asks for his early retirement.

The Ministry of Education, after being informed by the Police that criminal charges were brought against this particular executive with the registration of a criminal case on charges related to indecent assault and sexual harassment in the workplace, asked the EDY to be suspended. At the same time, in his own letter to the Public Service Commission, he requested his early retirement, since he is already close to retirement.

The EDY decided to forward the request for suspension, which is why it sent him a letter in which, after informing him of the request, he asked for his opinion on why he should be removed from his duties. The specific officer has the right to answer until tomorrow, Wednesday, when the EDY will also make its decisions. It is understood that the affected person will promote his position that it will be more in the interest of the State for his application for early retirement to be accepted, instead of being suspended, since for as long as he is suspended, half of his salary will be paid.

However, there is one parameter that is estimated to tip the scales for decision-making. In the event that the official of the Ministry of Education is suspended, then in any conviction, there is the power in the EDY to impose additional sanctions on his pension benefits, if this is deemed necessary. This, however, presupposes a conviction. It is noted that at the moment the affected person is outside the Ministry of Education with permission requested by him. A criminal case was registered against him last week before the Nicosia District Court.

The indictment includes two charges, one of allegedly indecent assault on a minor (since the complainant was under 16 years old at the time of the offense) and the second of sexual harassment in the workplace. The indictment has been served on the victim, while the first hearing is set for October 30.

The Police had initially investigated the complaint of a female teacher who stated that she had been indecently assaulted by the accused, while she was a minor. And while the complaint was investigated by the Sub-Directorate for the Management of Vulnerable Persons of the Police, the file was forwarded to the Legal Service with a specific recommendation, a new complaint emerged against the same person, this time from officials of the Ministry of Education, who were his subordinates. The investigation was completed and it was decided that one official could be prosecuted, which is why it was decided that both cases would be registered under the same indictment.

The fire brigades were alerted this morning after a fire broke out in a riverbed, near the industrial area of Agios Silas in Limassol, and which threatened a neighbouring factory. The Fire Brigade does not rule out the possibility that the fire was set maliciously.

According to an announcement by the Fire Service, three fire trucks from the stations of the Limassol district responded to the extinguishing operation, and the fire was brought under control shortly before 12:00. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the metal processing plant located near the scene.

The Hunting Service, with a Portable Firefighting Unit, and the Municipality of Kourion, with an excavator, assisted in the extinguishing work. The fire burned about three dozen yards of grass, wild vegetation and acacias.

The causes of the incident are being investigated in cooperation with the Police, as there are indications of malicious action, the Fire Department states.
