CARDS IN THE CROSSHAIRS OF FRAUDSTERS IN CYPRUS

 Filenews 1 September 2025

The Central Bank opened its papers for the first time on the incidents of payment fraud and the findings are not indifferent. The increase is clear, even if we remain below the eurozone average. The largest field of action of the swindlers turns out to be cards, with 94% of incidents recorded there and almost exclusively in online transactions. In cross-border payments, the likelihood of fraud skyrockets: 25 times higher than domestic ones.

However, when it comes to really large amounts, credit transfer fraud has the first say. There, 75% are cases where fraudsters manage to convince account holders to pay the abuser directly. On cards, the "classic" scenario remains the theft or misappropriation of payment information.

The application of strict identification seems to bring some results, but the message is clear: the clever always find ways and attention must remain constantly increased.
