The European Commission launched a public consultation on Tuesday to assess three key EU pieces of legislation regulating airport access and service pricing, with the aim of shaping a more resilient and competitive aviation sector.
The consultation will run until 28 October 2025 and is available on the Have your Say portal, in all official EU languages. Citizens, professionals and experts are invited to submit comments and proposals for updating or simplifying the legal framework.
The Commission assesses the effectiveness of existing regulations concerning:
- airport fees,
- the allocation of slots,
- and ground services, such as baggage handling.
These rules directly affect the operating costs of airlines and therefore the prices of tickets for passengers. At the same time, they affect connectivity, quality of service and waiting times at airports.
The Commission seeks to determine whether these regulations remain relevant to market needs and compatible with environmental priorities, given the new challenges, such as:
- market integration;
- the lack of manpower,
- increasing international competition;
- and the need for decarbonisation.
The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of the aviation sector, reduce administrative burdens and improve services to passengers.
Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, said that aviation is a key pillar for mobility, economic growth, job creation and trade facilitation. "It is crucial for connectivity in all regions of the EU," he underlined.
