ONLY ONE IN THREE WOMEN AGED 50-69 WAS SCREENED FOR BREAST CANCER IN 2023 IN CYPRUS

Less than one in three women aged 50-69 underwent a breast cancer screening in Cyprus in 2023, which ranks Cyprus in the penultimate position in the EU for countries with available data, according to Eurostat.

The percentage of women aged 50-69 who underwent breast cancer screening in Cyprus in 2023 amounted to 29.75%.

Control rates were below 40 percent in Poland, Latvia, Cyprus and Greece, which recorded the lowest percentage, at 14.5 percent.

Denmark, Sweden and Finland reported control rates above 80%, while Slovenia had a percentage just below this level (77.5%).

Screening for cervical cancer

Regarding cervical cancer screenings, Cyprus was not among the 20 countries for which data were available from Eurostat. Among the 20 countries, Sweden recorded the highest percentage (77.7%), followed by the Czech Republic (74.7%), Slovenia (74.4%), Ireland (74%) and Finland (73%).

On the other hand, the lowest percentages of women who had undergone cervical cancer screening were 10.9% in Poland and just 6.2% in Romania.

Screening for colorectal cancer

In addition, Eurostat published data on colon cancer screening rates for 2023, for 19 EU countries, with Cyprus not being one of them. The highest control rate was recorded in Finland (74.4%), the Netherlands (67.2%) and Sweden (64.7%). The control rate exceeded 50% in 6 other EU countries.

Only in Hungary (9%) was less than 20% observed.

The age range for this test has not been officially set for health statistics, however the recommended age group is 50–74 years old.
