MINISTRY OF ENERGY - ENERGY PLANNING FOCUSES ON MEASUREABLE PROJECTS - THE PROJECTS IT PROMOTES

The Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (YEEB) says it is working methodically and in coordination with other competent bodies to ensure electricity sufficiency, security of supply and cost reduction.

Increased demand and need for upgrade

According to the Ministry, the high temperatures of recent years are burdening the system, resulting in demand for conventional units at peak hours (18:00 – 21:00) increasing in the summer of 2025 by 11%, reaching 1,040 MW from 940 MW in 2024.

The Ministry of Transport and Distribution notes that with the implementation of infrastructure and the upgrade of the electricity network through the ten-year programs of the Transmission and Distribution Operators, steady steps are being taken towards the implementation of the energy plan.

The projects promoted by the Ministry

  1. The Ministry of Natural Gas
    reports that the Government has secured the receipt of the "Prometheus" FSRU for the Vassilikos terminal and the assignment to an international project consultant for its rapid completion.
  2. Competitive Electricity
    Market As noted, the electricity market opens on September 15, 2025 and commercial transactions start on October 1, 2025, with the aim of increasing RES penetration and reducing prices.
  3. Electricity Storage
    The Ministry underlines that a storage system integrated into the grid, with completion by June 2026, is being promoted, as well as additional storage infrastructure in EAC stationsprivate units and residential systems.
  4. Energy autonomy of
    consumers The Ministry of Energy and Consumer Affairs states that it supports self-production and self-consumption plans using RES and storage systems, reducing costs for households and small businesses.
  5. Upgrade of the Dhekelia
    Power Station According to the Ministry, the replacement of old units of the Dhekelia Power Station is in progress, enhancing the production capacity.
  6. Electrical Interconnections
    The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasizes that it promotes interconnections with neighbouring countries for a secure energy supply and adequate supply.

The Ministry notes that energy planning aims at concrete and measurable projects, correcting distortions of the past and avoiding vagueness.
