LIGHT IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY - DARKNESS IN ATA - GUILDS GATHER FOR DECISIONS

Filenews 1 August 2025 - by Charalambos Zakos

Half of the hoteliers, of those who did not follow the collective agreements, allegedly "disciplined" with the "wants" of the guilds and will pay what is provided for in the July payroll.

On the other hand, and while the crisis in the hotel sector seems to be heading towards de-escalation, the issue of ATA has flared up again, with the unions underlining that the gap between trade unionists and employers is now unbridgeable, warning of dynamic strike measures.

Many complied

As far as the hotel industry is concerned, information from "F" states that at the moment the difference for collective agreements is limited to two to three hotel groups, with the Ministry of Labor and its competent department already involved, in order to normalize the situation.

As we are informed, in the previous period the trade unions had proceeded to discussions with these groups and "white smoke" came out, at least for half of the hotels and the employers who initially did not pay what was provided for in the collective agreements.
Trade union circles that spoke to "F" said that the landscape will clear up in the coming days, when the salary is paid to all hotel employees and then the final decisions on strike measures will be taken.

As has been said before, the strike mobilizations will only concern those hotels that do not agree and, based on the latest data and the turn of some groups, it seems that any strikes will affect, but not to the utmost extent, the tourist season and the operation of hotels.

Behind bars for ATA

As comforting as the messages are for the hotel industry and collective agreements, the landscape is equally pessimistic regarding the differences in the ATA.

Indicative of the negative messages emitted for ATA were yesterday's statements by the General Secretary of SEK, Andreas Matsas, who announced that a decision on mobilizations will be made at the pan-union conference that will take place in the next few days.

In fact, Mr. Matsas, after a relevant question, was clear about the course of dialogue.  As he underlined, there are no convergences among the social partners, indirectly but clearly saying that they have reached an impasse. In conclusion, he stressed that the views are diametrically opposed.

It should be recalled that the all-union conference was supposed to take place on July 24, however, it was postponed due to the devastating fire in Limassol. So far, however, the date when the new conference will be held has not been made public.

As "F" is informed, any mobilizations that are decided, in the public and private sectors, will take place after August.
