INVESTIGATIONS REGARDING THE CAUSE OF THE LIMASSOL FIRE CONTINUE

Filenews 1 August 2025 - by Michalis Hatzivasilis

With every detail and meticulousness, the Limassol TAE investigates the causes of the deadly fire that burned huge areas and left behind two victims and millions of damages.

The team of investigators is doing systematic work and all aspects and all possibilities are being investigated, in order to exclude any scenarios that are out of reality. As Filenews is informed, an unprecedented number of people paraded from the investigators' offices, both for testimony and for interrogation.

As we were told, the scenario that it was a pyromaniac project was examined, while the authorities were informed that some hunters had differences with each other about the posts for the August hunting of the pheasant and since they did not find them, they burned them so that others would not take them. That is why hunters related to the burned areas were summoned, as well as persons who have been involved with the authorities with lighting fires in other cases. The interrogations did not show anything suspicious.

At the same time, all those who passed by the scene at the critical time were searched to be asked if they understood anything or for the purpose they were in the area. So far, nothing has been clarified, nor has there been any evidence that the fire was set maliciously or was accidental.

The reports of the Chief Fire Chief of the Fire Service, citing the testimony of a citizen, that there were two fires in the illegal garbage dump in Malia, before the fire broke out, are being examined with all seriousness, however, no other evidence has been found that shows any movement in the area at the time of the fire. There are no cameras at this particular point, while the fact that fires broke out at the same point in the previous days does not indicate the work of an arsonist, since the garbage could have been smouldering.

The investigations continue with the taking of testimonies from members of community authorities and other people in the area to see if they had noticed anything in the previous days, while satellite images are also being examined, in an attempt to identify anything suspicious.

At the same time, investigations continue into the circumstances of the death of the elderly couple who were fleeing the community of Sylikos in the midst of the fire, in order to see whether responsibilities arise. The investigations focus on whether the couple had been informed to evacuate their cottage and why the road from which they attempted to escape and was eventually burned inside their vehicle had not been closed.

The funeral of the two victims of the fire will be held today.
